Hi all,

hope this is the place to put a question which is driving me nuts !

Please excuse if I am posting the questions maybe a little awkward as I use the german translation of DVD Profiler.

I use DVD Prof. for years and usually backup/save my database in full, saving the file for emergency use or (as currently) for migration to a new PC with restore database.

However, since my last backup there is suddenly a little lock symbol in the file(.dpb) when look it up under restore.  HOWEVER, there is no file to find at that folder with the windows explorer, therefore I am unable to save/migrate this file.

I have never used any parental lock as far as I knew.

After experimentation I could disable the parental lock for the session (Can not remember if this was there before) and save the database to a DIFFERENT HDD folder. But any further save of the database in the usual folder (subfolder in the installation folder of DVD Pr.) is still with the lock symbol.

Has anyone any idea what in hell I could have unknowingly changed in any of the preferences or else ?
Or what this lock symbol indicates ?

This is driving me crazy as I do not know how the problem developed and the workaround is awkward
and not tested for future use.

And I have used this feature (save/restore database) for years without any problem.
Furthermore the installation with the new PC was fresh. Maybe I should have used an older backup and not the latest but to type in 100+ DVD via hand is time consuming and time is in VERY short supply.

Thanking you in advance for any reply

kind regards

You mean a lock symbol such as this?

This has nothing to do with DVDP or its parental lock system.

This is a Windows system symbol.

It means that this file (for whatever reason) is considered a system file and is protected.

Do the following.

Go to Windows Explorer and find the Folder options (it depends on which Windows version you are using)

Go to the View tab and
enable "Show hidden files, folders and drives".
disable "Hide protected operating system files"

Now you should be able to see the file in Windows Explorer and you can remove it. Windows will ask you if you are really, really, I mean, really, really sure about this? And then it's gone.

Afterwards you can choose to undo these settings above or not.

Thank you for the reply.

That is unfortunately not the problem. It has nothing to do with Win7. I already tried this also as a first idea.

I would like to insert a screenshot into this text, but I do not know how as it seems only be possible if it is an online image. I can't insert the .jpg by copy and paste.

Please don't get confused. The lock symbol ONLY shows if you select file menu ->backup/restore profile database->user defined location->search.. ->this opens a second window showing your .dpb files at that location. These files show on the left side a symbol of a paper sheet. However, since the problem started this paper icon also show a lock at bottom left corner (like in picture of previous post).

The thus designated files can NOT be normally accessed in the window explorer. They don't show there.

On my new PC I deleted the backupfolder in windows explorer and made a renamed one.
This DELETED folder shows up now (with a lock symbol) when you select the root directory when selecting the user defined location as above.

This REALLY drives me crazy as I cannot find ANY mention of this problem online.

Unfortunately I can not copy and paste a screenshot.

Hopefully someone may have an idea.

It seems that I can backup the profile database if I select a different location/HDD.
This fortunately seems to work normally.
But the fact remains I do not know how this problem started and I really would like to know what cased it and how to eliminate.

Thanks for your patience when reading this post.

Thank you for the tip. Had not thought about this.

The lock indicator is an indication of certain Windows permissions settings and is not related to DVD Profiler.

See the following page for details:

Thank you for your help.

I did not consider the difference between XP (old PC which has now crashed) and Win7.

I could not successfully replicate the procedure described in the link but it ponted me in the right direction.

When I started DVD Profiler as admin it seems to work as before which is all I wanted.

My thanks also to all others who contributed in helping me solve this problem.

kind regards
