It would be nice with a link to a "Studio guide" in this section of the contribution rules:

"Studios
List the Studios in the following priority.

Theatrical Release Studio(s)
Production Company(s)
DVD Distribution studio(s) if there is room available.
Do not abbreviate Studio names. e.g, use Universal Pictures not just Universal; The Criterion Collection rather than Criterion or Criterion Collection; Walt Disney Pictures not just Disney or Disney DVD. Exception: If the studio name is too long to fit, use standard abbreviation rules.

There is further information about correct names for studios, and the opportunity to ask questions if unsure, in the Contributions forum."

20th Century Fox or Twentieth Centry Fox or Twentieth Centry-Fox or Twentieth Centry Fox Film or... The database and contributions are full with variations.

Maybe someone can post the old list with correct names for studios?

I knew someone would bring it up.  In my opinion, the correct studio name is the one shown in the credits.  I am going to make a suggestion in the Rules Review forum that the rules be ammended to reflect that.  For most of the studios, it is probably the best way to go.  For those few that might raise a question, people can ask in the forum.  I don't think we need a special thread for it.

Personally I think Studios should be listed as the are on the DVD.

The As-Credited approach would work great IMO and, as with cast and crew it leaves no room for guesswork.

I did notice the Studios thread was not longer linked in the new set of rules. The Case Type thread was moved from IVS and is still linked in the rules but the Studios thread was not moved and, as I said, it is no longer linked.

Looks as though Invelos has decided agt the very least not to use the old thread. Only they can tell us why.

FWIW I know of quite a few people who have been submitting the studios "as credited" and they are being accepted all the time. Probably should get the rules changed so they can be "officially" allowed

EDIT: I see my Martian friend has similar thoughts on this

Of course it wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that I chose not to request the move, which Dan did. But then that wouldn't have allowed for you to throw your little jab now....would it.

you turn everything I say into something against you.

All I did was state facts based on the observations I made and added my opinion.

Fact: the studios thread was not moved over, the case type thread was

Fact: The revised rules don't link them as they did on the old site

Based on those facts I made the statement that "Invelos has decided at the very least not to use the old thread" I then qualified it with. "Only they can tell us why."

Who cares if you requested anything and what does that have to do with anything EVERYTHING I SAY IS NOT ABOUT YOU!!!!!!!!!! You continuously tell others they have know idea of what your intentions are yet you seem to know mine all the freggin time. Find somebody else to attack every time they post. It's really getting rediculous.

EDIT: No, Im' not going to turn this into a pi$$ing match. I will say no more in this thread

I think "as credited" is the way to go as well. It would be nice to get the rules fixed to accommodate what many are contributing anyway. And no, this is not an attack on Skip.

On the positive side there are 2 cool new features that help with studios:

  • Added ability to globally replace studios from the Tools->Edit Studios interface.

  • Totally new database repair feature, including optional automated removal of unused cast, crew, and studios.

  • With the global replace, you can take all of your "Buena Vista Home Ent." and "Buena Vista Home Entertai" and replace them ALL with "Buena Vista Home Entertainment". Most cool!

"As credited" is fine, but without the legal form description such as "Ltd." etc. But maybe the rules should (besides mentioning the legal form rule) also mention that the full studio name should be taken from the actual credits and not from the logo intro whenever possible, because the logo sometimes use a special graphical form of the name or not the full name at all (Universal vs. Universal Pictures).

I am not sure about this. I agree with you, in general, but sometimes the specifics can be a bear. It's hard to define but there are times when, as much as I am not nuts about it, the corporate designation seems to carry it's own unique cache and weight, and sometimes aids intracking a comapny's history. For example, Lucasfilm Limited, not even Ltd, you also will find times when X Co has changed to X Corp. to an LLC or whatever. Ever since this was last brought up I have been watching the titles as I edit them for Studios and this is as close as Ithink I can come to describing what I have seen. So, while I agree in principle, in practice I am not sure its a good idea.

Am I the only one who thinks it's strange that, just now when the new rules demand we use "common names" for cast and crew, we'd throw out a similar system for studios? Is it so strange that I don't want entries for both Lucasfilm Ltd. and Lucasfilm Limited, or even 20th Century Fox and Twentieth Century Fox? What purpose does that serve? I just want the software to be able to show me a list of all movies from a certain studio. Maybe there should also be a "credited as" system for studios?

This actually came up more than a year ago.  I, and many others, have never liked the 'common name' for studios.  Speaking for myself, I like the historical studio data.  I like to know, as an example, that Touchstone Pictures used to be called Touchstone Films.

Some people like sound credits, I like studio data.

    Agreed

At the very least we should stick to the guideline that we were working under before to drop the various Ltd, Ltd., Limited etc so that we don't get multiple iterations of the same studio.
I would also be willing to bet there are quite a few releases that have multiple versions of their name, using different abbreviaitons (or not) of Limited or similar extensions, on a single disc... as Credited would mean adding both (or ping-ponging between which is right) and that's just ridiculous.

Personally I found the old Approved Studio List thread invaluable for simplifying online data without losing any data of any importance and making Filtering so much more effective... and surely effectivness is the point.

I must agree that I also found the previous list invaluable, I often referred back to it when amending or submitting.
Surely it would not take long to create a list for the rules of acceptable studio names, anything beyond these, which will of course happen as time moves on, to be discussed in the forums on a case by case basis?
If not I can just see the Disney DVD, Ltd's, Lionsgate/LionsGate/Lions Gate etc etc creeping back into the database.

And the ability to globally replace studios from the Tools->Edit Studios interface is IMO one of the best additional features in the upgrade

I agree! I tidied up my studios last night and I loved it. I combined Touchstone Films and Touchstone Pictures too. Sorry, Unicus.

Don't freak out, people. This is personal data that I won't contribute.

I think the above idea would work for everyone.  Have the studio's main name and then all the variations as a sub name under the main studio in the studio db.  Then have an option to show the main or the sub on the profiles.  When you search on any of the subs or the main, it pulls up all movies for all studios in the subs and main.  Or have an option to just pull up movies by the sub.
