I know how to save my database online, but is there a way to save a copy to a local hard drive as well?

Menu: File -> Backup Database...

But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Yes, and I highly recommend doing so.  The online backup is useful, but not for restoring your database (IMO).
