Still waiting for my Sony KD-75X8505C. Delivery in Belgium has been postponed to end of July. Although it now appears it might be the first week of July.

I own a 4K upscaling BD player (Panasonic DMP-BDT361). I also ordered the new Sony BDP-S6500. But I own a Yamaha RX-V1067 receiver. I suspect if I passthrough the video signal, it won't be able to pass 4K. But it appears the TV can handle it's own upscaling. In fact, I hope the TV upscaling might be better as that of the players. If I need to replace my receiver, it would require a 1000€ extra I hadn't foreseen...

After a 10 week wait, I finally received my Sony KD-75X8505C. First impressions are very good. Going from a 55" to 75" adds a lot of screen space, so it's really impressive to watch a screen this big. Although I'm sure I will get used to this as well. I remember finding my 46" huge when I first got it.

Straight out of the box, it delivered a very good picture quality. I tested with the opening of Star Wars Episode III. Black levels were solid, I didn't notice any light bleed. I found some recommended settings on rtings.com and flatpanelshd.com, so I already performed the first tweaks. I have some holidays coming up, so I will get the chance to watch some movies, and tweak it some more.

I just ordered 2 3D glasses, as most of the manufacturers stopped delivering them with the set. I expect the 3D experience to be a big improvement, mainly due to the larger screen size.

Overall, a happy customer.

3D content will not be in 4k I think. I upgraded my Amp to the Yamaha RXV3077 which handles my 4k up-scaling needs. I find that 3D seems not to be able to be delivered in 4k yet. (At least up-scaled).
I was lucky that my LG came with glasses and also had the Gamers glasses as well. Also added the extra speakers to go to 11.2.
The only biggie was to make sure that the cables are proper 4k certified. I had a major issue in that my certified 4k cables were not!. Had to upgrade 5 cables, but managed to get them cheap through wifes store discount via work. $80 cables came down to $17 after discount. Just goes to show how much markup there are on some items. (We get things at Cost + 5% + Tax).

Thanks for the heads up on the cables. For now, I going to continue with my Yamaha RX-V1067.
As there are no native 4K players yet, I'm going to hold off until the new Yamaha RX-A1050 gets a price drop. Image is great anyway.

I wanted to go for LG as well, but in Europe, all models were updated, except the 75". They are still offering the 2014 model of that size. Makes no sense in my opinion, as it has been developed for other locations.

Nope. No jump to 4k here.  I have not even jumped to Blu-ray yet!

I haven't jumped to 4K either yet. Waiting for OLED displays to come down in price and to mature a bit more as a technology. Still on an older Panny plasma. I can't stand watching LCD screens: to me their images look very artificial and unnatural, and then there are the washed-out blacks and poor viewing angles.

I know this is something they should provide as part of the installation, but spend the extra money and have the LCD calibrated and all that "artificial, unnatural and washed-out blacks" will go away.

I used calibrated settings from a website. They claim it is indeed TV specific, but if you copy them, in most cases you get up to 95% of the perfect settings. The settings seem to work just fine for me. So I'm not sure if a calibration will make any difference to my eyes.

I just wonder about 3D. There is no 3D in 4K, but can a 4K TV play 3D in normal HD Quality with no upscaling?

Thanks,

Fritz

I'm not talking about just the calibrations you can do, but the tech has the device he attaches to the screen and adjusts each color individually based on your likes and dislikes in the environment and lighting you usually watch in. I don't know if this is still a factor on the new 4K TVs or not.

Yes, 4K TV have an upscaling for 2D discs to show them as 4K, don't know how this is with 3D films.

No, HD content needs to be upscaled to be displayed at 4K resolution, i.e. "to fill a 4K screen", if you like. All 4K TVs offer upscaling routines, some better than others.

If you have ever seen a calibrated OLED screen next to a calibrated LCD screen in proper viewing conditions (i.e. not on a shop floor lit like a torch) you will come to a different conclusion.

Moreover, no calibration can change the inherent limitations of LCD technology, such as terrible viewing angles (compared to either CRT, plasma or OLED), clouding issues displaying bright items on dark backgrounds (due to the necessity of backlighting in LCD)  etc. The same is true for limitations of plasma technology, such as limited maximum brightness and the danger of image retention. It is a question of personal preference which limitations you find the easiest to live with. No current technology is able to display perfect images. OLED is promising, but is still in relative infancy and not quite there yet.

Finally, what looks artificial and unnatural to me, does not necessarily look like that to others. We're all different. Some people are more sensitive to motion judder than others. Etc. etc.

Talk about seeing things differently, my brain saw LCD as LED. I think I'm going back to the funny farm now.
