I originally posed this question to the invelos support group and they said that Bulk Edit would do it but when that failed they suggested that I post here.

How can I create a new DVDP collection using the XML export file from the My Movies application? When I tried it with Bulk Edit Load I got a "XML Format Not Recognized Error".  Is there a way to edit the XML file so that it is acceptable to Bulk Edit?  If Bulk Edit is not the solution does anyone know of a process to accomplish this?

Thanks

Bulk edit supports the Invelos XML export format, and some prior version of CollectorZ. I have not seen the MyMovies format. If you know how to look at it, then that's your clue about compatibility. If not, then perhaps you can post a sample - just a couple of the most complete or complex DVDs. Or you can PM me a sample. If you do it here, there are some smart guys around that usually come forward to help out on XML conversions. If your post takes up a bunch of space, you can always delete it later after we grab the contents.
Thanks for your support.

With XSL-transformation!

Like mediadogg already mentioned, give us an example and we can surely cook up something.

I read somewhere that the MyMovies XML file is now encrypted. If that is true, all bets are off. Do they also have CSV export? If so, Bulk edit can adapt to "any" CSV format using a mapping function.

Sorry for the delay in getting back here.
The MyMovies XML is not encrypted and unfortunately there is not a CSV export.
I created a collection with two movies and one TV series and did the XML export.  I am sorry but even that is a lot to post but here it is:

OK cool. Please leave the post for a bit - I only have my tablet at the moment, so I will grab the text sometime tomorrow.

Now, here is the deal: there are basically three ways to approach this:

(1) You have NO personal data. All you want is the movie data in a DVD Profiler database. In this case, all you need are the "barcode" entries from the XML. This would take Mithi about 3 nanoseconds to do with an XSL script or equivalent. After the list of barcodes is created, there are multiple ways of importing, depending on the distribution of Localities in your collection (if you don't get this, ask).Note that all movie metadata will come from an online profile refresh from Invelos. All MyMovies metadata, except barcode, will be ignored and lost.

(2) You do have personal data, such as notes or purchase price, and you want to add that information to the movie metadata. In this case, the XSL or other script would be more complex, and would need to create official Invelos format XML, or be converted inside a plugin to create profiles. There are several of us that could do either of those, especially if you think there might be others that would benefit in the future. Note that all movie metadata will come from an online profile refresh from Invelos. All MyMovies metadata, except barcode, will be ignored and lost.

(3) Regardless of the personal data, you want to faithfully convert all the MyMovies metadata into a DVD Profiler database. This has been something that I have done in the past - for CollectorZ and DVDSpot (on reflection, this not true - I only captured personal data). But note in this case, you will have to lock most of the fields, or risk them being overridden by an online refresh. And you absolutely will NOT be able to contribute such profiles. They will need to remain local only, or risk the wrath of Titans, Godzilla, King Kong and 100,000 Lol cats!

There are some tweaks to the above, once we decide on the basic approach. For example, we have some code that can make a good guess about Locality by analyzing the barcode (UPC/EAN) and/or the movie rating. And we can capture IMDB IDs and create MyLinks entries ... stuff like that.

So, which is it - 1, 2, or 3 ? (Or something else)? OK, I'm pretty much done with editing now, and I will copy the XML later and let you know.
Thanks for your support.

mediadogg, thanks for your support.

I don't know what you are referring to in "distribution of Localities".  Unless this poses a problem, option 1 should provide what I need.  I know that MyMovies does not provide "barcodes" for TV series and the DVDs I created but I could add those manually.

The XML file for my full collection is about 11 MB.

Thanks

A locality in DVDP terms is where you bought the DVD. There are two kinds of collectors. Some only buy local - because the cost of importing is too high or they need DVDs with their native tongue audio tracks / subtitles.

Others buy all over the world.

DVDP identifies a DVD by its barcode and the locality it was purchased because very often the same DVD with the same barcode is sold in several countries and only the cover was switched from one language to another.

Thank you for your explanation.

With that definition, Locality is not a concern to me since I live on a sailboat and my locality is always changing.

No, then it becomes a problem exactly.

The less localities one has in its collection, the easier it is to import into DVDP

Gentleman, with all due respect, I must correct some nuances in the discussion of Locality. It is often misunderstood.

It is NOT always the country where the DVD was purchased. I buy Japanese, French and other Localities in the USA all the time. Purchase prices are all in US$. This is why Purchase Price Currency Country is not necessarily the same as Locality. I'm sure that most members have a similar situation.

Locality is the country for which the DVD was orginally produced to be marketed or distributed, and for which the authorized Rating is valid. For example, a Swedish Locality DVD will have a Rating consistent with the Swedish authorities, even though you might prurchase and / or use that DVD anywhere else in the world.

This is the basis for the "Locality guessing" done by BulkEdit:

- If the locality is provided, either in a separate column or as part of the ProfileID, then use it
- If the locality is not provided, but a Rating is available, make a first guess by checking for which countries the Rating is valid (some are unique - that makes it easy!)
- If the rating is not present, or does not produce a unique Locality, then parse the UPC. There is a loose association between UPC codes and country Locality. There are lots of exceptions and overlaps. So, if I get a Locality that is common between the two guesses, I use it. Otherwise, I let the wookie (UPC guess) win  .

One item I have not explored is the reliability of SRP Currency as an indicator of Locality. But that is rarely available in these types of projects anyway.

In the cases where there is no UPC or ProfileID, BulkEdit will assign a manual ID and create a manual profile. You can change this later, if you subsequently discover the true UPC for the DVD. You will not need to enter these unknown or personal DVDs manually. BulkEdit will still do it for you automatically, by incrementing the manual ID as necessary to insure that it is unique within the database.

@Sailing: I now have the sample XML copied, so you can delete if you want or leave it - your choice.

I will be travelling for a few days. Back next week. This is a good type of project to mess with on the plane and while waiting in terminals.

Meanwhile, I will happily take advantage of any suggestions for field mapping, or if Mithi wants to take a shot at conversion to DVDP XML, be my guest. Just let me know, so that I don't start writing plugin code.

... but even that is a lot to post but here it is:

Ugly beast, that XML. No Encoding, randomly inserted " -"
(absolutely not your fault, just had to be said )

Okay, I trimmed it down, meaning I deleted the information that will come from the DVDProfiler-Maindatabase anyways, the rest is:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>
<Titles>
  <Title>
    <CollectionNumber>1</CollectionNumber>
    <Barcode>032429043726</Barcode>
    <Country>United States</Country>
    <LocalTitle>Iron Man</LocalTitle>
    <IMDB>tt0371746</IMDB>
    <ParentalRating TV="False" Adult="False">
      <Value>4</Value>
      <Description>Rated PG-13 For Some Intense [...]</Description>
    </ParentalRating>
    <Watched>False</Watched>
  </Title>
  <Title>
    <CollectionNumber>2</CollectionNumber>
    <Barcode>024543229919</Barcode>
    <Country>United States</Country>
    <LocalTitle>The Abyss</LocalTitle>
    <IMDB>tt0096754</IMDB>
    <Watched>False</Watched>
  </Title>
</Titles>

Questions: Do you want to keep
  • <CollectionNumber> or is this just a default you don't care for?

  • <IMDB>; this number isn't supported by DVD Profiler and you can't use it inside DVD Profiler, but you may want to use it somewhere down the line via the XML-Export. You could store it either in "Notes" or (like I do) in the "Slot" information (see "DVD -> Personalize" in Profiler) as I don't have a Disc-Changer so I don't use this field as intended anyways.

  • and did you used the <Watched>-feature?

  • Problem, or at least inconvenience: the second title, The Abyss, seems to be a Canadian release, DVD Profiler knows only this one under the given UPC. The <Country> doesn't seem to help as both are "United States"

    Depending on your answers we could proceed:
    1) "Just the UPC": I could (in fact already have) built a XSLT that would extract all the UPC as simple text and you import it in DVD Profiler and afterwards check for locality-discrepancies.
    2) One or more of the three tags should be maintained: I built a XSLT that put those into DVD-Profiler XML. I'll try with those two how BE behaves regarding "The Abyss"

    cya, Mithi

    PS I have those two movies ready: XML-file <- right-click this link and choose 'save as'. Import this with BulkEdit and refresh the profiles. You'll notice that only Iron Man is refreshed. Now highlight The Abyy, goto DVD -> Change UPC and choose the Locality "Canada" and refresh again and et voila, everything is nice and shiny.
    You would have to repeat that for every non-United_States Profile. If those are only a small fraction of you titles it still beats the hell out of manually re-entering.

    Mithi,  the test worked very well.

    I do not need the collection number brought over.  I would like to have the Watched flag and the IMDB number.  Putting the IMDB in the Slot field is great.  I don't have a changer either.

    Please let me know what I need to do next.  Remember my full XML file is about 11 MB.

    mediadogg, the process you use for selecting Locality works fine for me.

    Thanks to both of you for your help.

    I am humbled and speechless. Mithi rules and reigns supreme.

    Let me know if I need to tweak BE or you hit a bug. The nice thing about an automated process is that you can just run it again if necessary. Very little extra work!

    BE should handle multiple TAGS ok. And of course to use slot, yoi need to create at least one disc. - but you know that.

    I wonder, what is description? Is it Notes? What is Local Title? Do we need either of these for a profile that is to be refreshed?

    And Mithi, don't forget that if no UPC exists, we probably want to capture everything (sorry) into the manual profile - since it is likely to not be refreshed.

    Sometimes I wish I could send you a fruit basket or something. You are so helpful - I really appreciate it also.

    IMDB already done, Watched now also.

    In the XSL there are two lines you may want to edit:
          <Timestamp>1900-01-01T00:00:00.000Z</Timestamp>
    the time of the "Watched", I'd figure some fixed time would be in order, so you can later distinguish them from 'real' Watched-Events
          <User FirstName="" LastName="" EmailAddress="" PhoneNumber=""/>
    Here you should enter your name or nickname you use in DVD Profiler (Tools -> Edit Users)

    Battleplan:
    [I] download sailing.xsl
    [II] download msxsl.exe, a small command-line tool from Microsoft
    [III] put a copy(!) of your XML, the XSL and msxsl in one directory (preferably your user-directory)
    [IV] make your XML valid. For this you have to load it in an editor and change in the first two lines:
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    -<Titles>
    to:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252"?>
    <Titles>
    otherwise the XSLT-processor will refuse to work.
    [V] now go to a commandline (Windows-Start and enter cmd in the search-line and press enter), which will bring you to your user-directory. Type

    msxsl.exe $name_of_your_mymovies_export.xml sailing.xsl > converted.xml

    [VI] and after a few moments your brand-new XML will be ready.

    Notice that the titles will be imported as "aaa Iron Man" and the like, so after a refresh the profiles that didn't get refreshed are easy distinguishable by a) the screwed-up title and b) the missing cover.
