I had a problem connecting my iPhone to my computer using the host name. I then used the IP address and it worked. I think it has to do with the fact that I have a special character in my host name, so it is not strictly alpha-numeric.

I was never able to connect via host name and in my case there aren't any special characters. The host name connection seems to be a bit difficult to establish. No big deal since connecting via IP works without a problem but probably something that should be improved in a future update.

Same deal as SilentBob1138 -- can't sign in via the hostname but can via the IP address. No special characters in my host name (is case important?), and there's only one subnet.

Hostname never worked for me - but IP address was first time a charm..

I would also strongly recommend to work with an IP address.

Moreover, in order to prevent accidental conflicts, I assign a fixed IP address to all my devices on wifi.
e.g. my iPhone's ends with .97; my PC with .98; my PS3 with .99 etc.
That way you're sure all devices have a unique IP address and no accidental conflicts can arise.
