One way to include this would be to have a list of subtitle tracks like the existing list of audio tracks, with two dropdown menus for each line: one for the language, and the other for "standard" or "for the hearing impaired" (or something similar). That would allow both standard and "hearing impaired" subtitle tracks to be added for all relevant languages as appropriate. Thanks in advance for considering it.  |

So there should be some way to show for both. So maybe a 3rd option that says "Standard & Hearing Imparied"... or something to that effect.
That way you have the choice of language with a drop-down for...

For example, I recall seeing all of these (though not all on the same release)
English Subtitles
English Text (translates on-screen text... used in conjunction with dub track)
English Subtitles & Text (both verbal and written translations)
English Commentary (subtitles for commentary, or wholly text summary)
English for the Hearing Impaired
English Comedy Track (deliberately inaccurate translations)
Those permutations are cases that I'm aware of, but I'm sure that there will be more.
Where I have seen these, it is usually two or three version of the same language on the same release (e.g. English Text and English Subtitles & Text). Whether it's worth it or not is a different matter, but that would be my preference. | | | This is a sig... ... ... yay...

DariusKyrak - I see what you're saying, but in my opinion, the ability to filter one's collection by the existence of 'x for the hard of hearing' subtitles is important. Presumably, there are people for whom the feature is either essential or greatly improves the watching experience; for these people (or when they are visiting), it would be very useful to be able to exclude unsuitable titles at the click of a few buttons. That would not be possible with a free-text field, or at the least would be more difficult.
There's no reason I can see why the second drop-down menu in each line couldn't include some of these other types of subtitle though, which would give us the best of both worlds. Perhaps it would be an idea for people to reply with as many of the different variants they've seen as possible so that a list can be made? There could also be an 'Other' option as a catch-all for any rare ones that we miss - or even a free-text field for these as well as the menus for the other 99% of discs.
Your post has made me realise that the Filters section of the software would need to be altered as well, so as to include both menus. |
