| | Posted: | | | | It is really time we updated languages to include amongst others the South American versions of Spanish and Portuguese. More and more discs now include these as standard and there is added confusion as the quite separate language of Catalan is included and often confused with Castillian (Catalan is a sort of Spanish / French hybrid and with a fraction of the speakers of the South American Castillian). We have many minute languages in our list but several major ones are still excluded. One could also argue for French Canadian, and additional Asian languages. In a similar vein the subtitles need a tweak too. Chinese as a written language has two major forms: abbreviated as used on the mainland and full traditional characters as used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and by many overseas Chinese. One can write some dialoge in dialects using special characters such as Cantonese or Hokien etc but generally Chinese will be subtitled by script NOT by dialect. These are often muddled up because non Chinese do not know the difference! As Chinese is a MAJOR world language with a huge number of films reaching the rest of the world we really need to get this up to date. It must be so easy to do, it beats me why we are still so out of date! |

No problem to agree on the french canadian language, since it makes a difference if a movie or a TV serie is dub in France or here. If they are dub in France the movie had more chances to be a flop in my province, since the big majority don't appreciate them and find them annoying (try to watch a sport film dub in France if you want to understand). Of course I watch all my movies in their original language, but most french canadian don't do that and that will be something helpfull in the database for many. |

I can actually think of an example where that applies to one profile: "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" has a US English and a UK English soundtrack. Mad Max also have Australian English sound track  |

Tamil and Telugu as additional language. There are movies in more then 17 languages in India but these 2 are the largest ones after Hindi.
They are different languages with different writing und both are releasing g over 300 movies a year.

Not necessarily, if the DVD menu or cover says UK English - that's what gets entered, being able to type in what we want shouldn't override the fact that we take as much data as we can from the actual DVD. No, IMO, "credited as" is not the desired method to profile audio and subtitle languages. But maybe a list based on ISO 639-2 would be appropriate. Or it could be based on RFC 5646. Maybe it could be restricted to language-region such as en-US, fr-CA, de-CH. Keep in mind, that with such as system the UI would still present the languages according the list in a presentable string which would as well be translatable such as "English (United Kingdom)", "French (Canada)", "German (Switzerland)". | | | | Last edited: by RHo |
