Documentaries and featurettes are two completely different things (especially when you are using the featurette box for full-length docs).

Many discs offer behind-the-scenes documentaries (like The Exorcist, The Shining, Bullitt and on and on) and these are not featurettes.

Could a "Documentary" field be added to the features to differentiate between the two?

I'd be all for treating feature length docs as bonus features.

They are according to the rules.  If people want a separate listing for feature length documentaries, I wouldn't be against it, as long as 'feature length' was well defined.

Yeah, I agree they are according to the rules, but featurette is an inaccurate description of a full length doc.

I also agree feature length needs to be defined.

I agree with what Martian said... and defining feature length will be the hard part. We batted that around once before and we could never come up with any easy way of defining Feature Length.

What about going with what the Motion Picture Academy goes by for the Oscars?

That would work for me personally. Can't remember what all the complaints/problems were about the last time. And I doubt very much I will be able to find the discussion again now. Not with the search here. we will have to see what others think.

Last time I remember this coming up was here.

There was another, short, discussion here.

It seems like no one is really adverse to it, but it's just a matter of the definition of it that is tricky.

They are called Featurettes, Alien. Now if the day ever comes that ken can stop addressing some of minutiae that people want him to address and address something that would really be of benefit then perhaps we will see the day when we will be able to be able to more adequately define what those Special features really are.

I'm all for the 40+ minute rule. A lot of the people who make these docs are are famous in their own right for it (Charles de Lauzirikia, for instance).

I wouldn't put any limit on it, Ace of any kind. One man's gold is another man's rubbish. Just allow us to take the descriptions from the Menus, this way we can capture specific data regarding features, including which trailers may be on the disc and so forth. Would it be useful to  able to include rutimes of the various Featurettes...maybe.

That is interesting.  I think it would be very cool to be able to have a list of the trailers that are on a disc.

We can't use desciptions from menus to distinguish as most menus only list the title and don't call it a featurette or a full-length doc.

Maybe a field in Features can be added to include further details, such as featurette (or feature-length documentary) titles and running time, as well as trailer details. Also, a partial solution might be found in what I did for my local database on "Citizen Kane,' which includes the "Battle Over Citizen Kane" doc on the second disc. I found a child profile for it in the database and added it to my collection, using the Box Set Contents feature to attach it to the main profile. In the case of feature-length docs, if a profile doesn't exist in the database, perhaps you can make a manual profile and attach it as a child profile. It can't be contributed, of course, but it might be useful for a local database.

Just a thought.
