Here is the credit:

Special Alien Creatures and Effects by Greg Cannom

I'm reading it as two credits
1.) Special Alien Creatures by
2.) Special Alien Creatures Effects by

Would 1 = Creature Designer
Would 2 = Visual Effects

Where in the heck do you pick up Make-up Effects out of that credit? .

Probably because Martin knows that that's what Greg Cannom does - he's a special make-up effects artist.
That's why I don't like the way the new credits have been handled - a lot of the time you need to know what someone has done before you can put them in the right category.

I didn't, but I know Greg Cannom is a well-known special make-up effects artist. So he should be entered as such.

That's right, those visual/makeup/creature effects are not as easy as they look.

Greg Cannom was a makeup and special effects artist
not exclusive a Creature Designer or Make-up Effects, he's done also special effects.

so I would go by the credits and not use wishfull reading between the lines.

That's not exactly a specific credit. There's no mention on that site or any site of any effects he's done that aren't makeup or prosthetic work.

Edit: the biggest problem I think is that "special effects" has been lumped into the "visual effects" section without acknowledging the fact that "special effects" is an all-encompassing description that covers everything from a bullet squib to the CGI Gollum.
It seems to me to be nonsense to credit someone like Rick Baker or Greg Cannom with "visual effects" when their work is almost exclusively prosthetic in nature and therefore much closer to the "makeup effects" credit.

I am glad to see I am not the only one that feels that way.  Needless to say, I agree with this.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.
