A variation on the "Shrink Wrap=Box Set" Question |

| | Posted: | | | | Normally I would say two DVDs bound together in shrink wrap would not be a box set as the "Box Set" disappears once you remove it.
However, ADV Films is now re-releasing a lot of their older back titles as "Two Packs". The problem is they reprinted the artwork for the packages DVDs without the UPCs. The only UPC is the one on the shrink wrap. The title in question is "Shinobi Double Pack 2", UPC 702727-189920. Both DVDs in the set are in the Database (702727-101427 and 702727-101526). The art work is the same except the where the UPC was in the original release there is now a US TV rating and Canadian rating. With the reprinting the Disc IDs no longer match (Volume labels are same).
Should I:
*) I submit as new profiles using disc ID and no parent profile.
*) Update the existing profiles with the new Disc IDs (allowed per rules for re-releases) even though UPC was removed so people can find existing profiles by disc ID.
*) submit as a box set using the shrink warp UPC with new child profiles by disk ID even though the "box" is shrink wrap that will go in the trash (Put it inside one of the cases for now).
I am leaning towards the first option. |

This is not allowed per the rules. While they allow adding alternate disc-ids to the original profile for re-releases they do not allow adding the info of your DVDs that have no UPC to an existing UPC. You'd basically using a fake UPC, albeit one used by the same movie. Your release does not have a UPC and thus may not be entered (or edited) with such. You have to add it per disc-id. I'd do it without the boxset as it really serves no purpose in this case, but a contribution adding the boxset would be okay imho. | | | | - Jan |

I've contributed two of these sets so far and based my logic on similar ideas (and made parent cover scans before disassembling the... "box".) The parent UPC is unique and not specific to a particular vendor, so fortunately everyone acquiring these sets new in-store or online can plug that UPC in and get the same profile and associated children. The discIDs I've seen so far also have been identical for all but one of the prior releases - exception being Neo Tokyo, which is a remaster correcting an aspect ratio bug. These 2for1 re-releases (from what I've seen) are for feature films or separate mini series, so fortunately are a bit easier to define as a box set by profile than, say, related TV seasons being bundled. |
