I've finally managed to get all my missing canadian discs submitted and approved into the system, now I'm going back and working on discs with a ton of missing information. The most consistently missing information applies to t.v. seasons, and missing crew and cast.

X-Files Season 2 for example, has no cast listing. And seasons 4, 5 & 6 just have a basic cast listing, not divided into episodes and such.

As mostly everyone here knows, not a whole lot of t.v. cast listings actually give character names.

Is it okay for me to cross reference with say, imdb and tv.com to get character names? Is there a specific site I should be checking that would allow for me to submit these changes without getting a whole lot of no votes on the contribution?

Also, I'm curious as to how one would handle an entire series boxset?

The only one I currently own is the entire series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Again, that just has a basic cast listing of maybe twenty characters. Would changes to that cast be submitted the same way they are to other t.v. seasons. Such as listing all the episodes, then all the cast? That would be one HELL of a long cast listing. It would have, what, around 140 episodes listed for the cast and crew?
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

You would've found some answers in the contribution rules:
Quote:
Complete Series/Season & Anthologies of Episodes:
Enter Cast and Crew for each episode using standard rules, and insert dividers to separate each episode's credit list from the others. Do not list Cast and Crew outside of the dividers even if they are credited in all episodes.

Enter the episode number and title in the divider that marks the beginning of that episode's credit list. The divider should be formatted as "1. Episode Title", or "Episode 1" if no title is available.

Take the episode title from the episode itself, or from elsewhere on the DVD or DVD packaging, exactly as shown. If all episode titles are entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead. If the episodes are listed with quotes around each title, exclude the quotes.

If the DVD or DVD packaging specifically numbers the episodes, use that number in the divider. Otherwise, episodes are to be numbered sequentially in the order that they appear on the DVD(s) in the set, with the number sequence carrying over from disc to disc. Do not number non-episodic features such as movies or alternate cuts unless they are given specific numbers on the DVD or DVD packaging.

Quote:
Crew and Cast
Take Crew Credits from the film credits only; list names exactly as they are in the credits. Exception: If the credit information is entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead.

I believe Merrik was referring to the provision made in the rules for when an associated role does not appear in the credits (emphasis added):

Quoting Rules:
Quote:
  • If an actor is credited by name but does not have an associated role, you may use the film itself, or another source to identify the role. However, mass copy from a third party commercial database which violates their stated usage license is not allowed. In each case, list Actor’s names and roles (when given) exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited.

  • I was, thanks calebandco. I thought I made that fairly clear, but possibly not.

I've read the contribution rules about eight thousand times since I started submitting stuff, I'm fine with what the rules state. What I'm asking, is if I submit a contribution to add the cast to The X-Files Season Two where no character names are given during the credits, and I state "character names taken from (insert source other than credits here)" where should I go to find those so I'm not bombarded with a ton of no votes stating "you can't take information from IMDB (or whever else I take it from)!!"

As long as you make it clear, in your notes, what you are doing and why, you shouldn't have any problems.  I have done several TV sets and I use TV.com and IMDb as my main reference material.  When they agree, I consider it valid.  When they don't, I do more research.  If I can't find anything else, I leave it blank.  What follows are my standard notes and I have yet to have a submission declined...

Added cast per episode with dividers.  None of the cast have associated roles so I used other sources, per the rules.  Those sources included TV.com and IMDb among others.

    ...hope that helps.

You may also be lucky and the tv series you're profiling has an official website. That is also an acceptable source and as it's connected to the series, does not need to be verified with other sources (though it would be nice if you did  ).

I know what you meant, and I'm sorry for overlooking the crew in my quote.

I see the rules are not totally clear on that issue, but you're allowed to take names from other credits and add roles as you see fit. I guess this at least involves finding cast names in the beginning of the episode and on the cover.

It seems it's not completely disallowed to take credits from other sources as well, as long as you don't violate their stated usage license.

    Eric

I'm starting with my X-Files seasons right now, yeah.

I'm currently only going to do the ones that have no cast/crew or generic cast crew (such as listing the ten main stars of the series and leaving everyone else out), but for those ones, I'm also going to try to update any extra fields that need updating as well.

Here's the ones I have in my collection that I'm going to work on ('cause we might have different UPC's or something):

X-Files: The Complete Second Season - UPC: 024543222576 (working on this one right now, up to episode 16).
X-Files: The Complete Fourth Season - UPC: 024543228547
X-Files: The Complete Fifth Season - UPC: 024543228592
X-Files: The Complete Sixth Season - UPC: 024543228646

The rest of my X-Files seasons seem to have complete cast information, and complete crew information for what was available at the time of the submission (so like, none have costume designer or anything, but I'm not worrying about that at the moment).

Can someone point out to a slower guy what you mean by subtitles? I'm trying to remember if I've ever put subtitles on for a t.v. series, and it's not popping into my head, so I have no clue what you're talking about.
