| | Posted: | | | | I noticed that there are a couple of contributions for Criterion Collection titles that are moving Janus Films to the Media Companies field.
I have always been under the impression that Janus Films is a film distributor. It certainly must have been since it is 50 years old and operated long before home video came about. But I guess it could have moved into the media field as well...
What's your opinion? Should they be listed under studios, media companies (or not at all)? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

| | Posted: | | | | Like tweeter says, it's just a logo + name that comes after the Criterion logo and before the actual film. There's also the same logo on the back cover.
The contributions I noticed were the ones in their Monsters and Madmen boxset:
The Haunted Strangler
Corridors of Blood
First Man into Space
The Atomic Submarine
but like tweeter says, there are a whole bunch of Criterions that carry the Janus Films logo, and they all look the same, afaik. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users.

For example White Mane, The Red Balloon, a double feature of those two, and Paddle to the Sea. While those DVDs are advertised on Criterion's website, the actual DVDs themselves do not not have "The Criterion Collection" anywhere on the case. All of them do have "Janus Films" on the case however. So, in the case of those four at least, IMO, Janus Films is the distributor.
I don't have any of their Essential Art House brand releases, so I can't check those right now. I'll take a look the next time I drop in Borders, they always have some. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Looking at these titles on DVD Empire I would have to agree that Janus Films seems to be the distributor. On that handful of titles you listed (Red Balloon, White Mane), it looks like Janus may actually qualify as the media company. The Essential Art House has the Criterion "C" logo on them (or at least the two volumes I saw at Best Buy the other day did) but they don't seem to be in "The Criterion Collection" per se so I'm not sure what to make of them. But for the standard Criterion Collection titles, Janus is definitely not a media company. | | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |
