I just posted this in the studios-thread (link), but then I thought that a poll might be a good idea...

The first post of this thread states "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" as the proper name for Fox's distributing branch.

However, today I encountered a contribution using "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment". I don't care which one we use, but I do want to be consistent. So do we stick with "20th" or change them all to "Twentieth"?

In light of the forthcoming wave of distributor updates, I'd like to try settle this real quick...

For what it's worth: I pulled out a number of Fox DVD's to examine them. The logo, mostly shows both on the back cover and on the spine, uses the "20th Century Fox" logo with the words "Home Entertainment" added below it. However, if you look at the fine print where it actually says something along the lines of "Distributed by", then you'll find that it says "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" almost every single time. I'm not sure, but the reason that the studios-thread uses the shorter "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" version may have been that the studios field just wasn't long enough to allow the longer variant back then.

I really like consistency, but if different titles have different version, then I think we should use what's on the cover. Since this option isn't in the poll, I didn't vote.

Where on the cover? As I noted earlier, most Fox covers use both: are you going by the various logos that use "20th", or with the small print where it says "Distributed by Twentieth Century Home Entertainment"? You're still going to have to choose: just have a look at a few of your own Fox DVD's and you'll see what I mean. Here's a few examples:

- 'Airheads' U.S. R1 DVD: "20th" in logos on both the spine and the cover, but "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" in the copyright notice.

- 'Arrested Development: Season Three' U.K. R2 DVD: "20th" in logos on both the spine and the cover, but "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" in the copyright notice.

- 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery' U.K. R2 DVD: "20th" in logo on the back cover, no written mention in copyright notice at all.

- 'Remington Steele: Season One' U.S. R1 DVD: "20th" in logos on both the spine and the cover, but "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" in the copyright notice.

- 'Raising Arizona': Dutch R2 DVD: "20th" in logos on both the spine and the cover, but "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" in the copyright notice.

I don't care whether you regard the question as choosing between the two name variants or choosing between where on the cover you pick the name from, but the result remains pretty much the same. Which one do we use?

I thought we weren't supposed to use logos - we don't for on-screen credited companies, do we?

I've only seen it written as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on the profiles I've worked on, so I would have to go with that option....

That being said - it's no big deal for me personally - either way will do...

I'm perfectly happy to agree with that, but like Telecine I've always been using "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" as per the Studio Reference thread, and I think quite a few users have. Seeing as almost ALL Fox DVD's use the longer variant in the copyright notice, maybe the entry in the studios list should be changed. As it is, a number of users will refer to that thread as a reason to vote against a proposed change from "20th" to "Twentieth". The poll results also seem to indicate that people are pretty fond of the "20th"...

Huh?! Your update was the reason for me starting this thread: you updated the distributor for the 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery' entry I mentioned earlier to 'Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment', while that particular DVD is as of yet the only one I've found to only show the "20th" logo and not mention the longer variant in the copyright notice. So you've done the exact opposite of what you're saying here: you've updated the ONE "20th" profile I've been able to find so far with "Twentieth"...

Again: if, like Berak said, we're going by how it's written in the copyright notice, then it's going to "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment" in almost ALL cases. This U.K. 'Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery' profile we're talking about is a rare exception in that it only shows the logo, but where the name isn't mentioned in the copyright notice at all. I'd be interested to know if there are more examples of this: I haven't been able to find a single other one as of yet: all others do mention "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment".

Oops, kind of misread the comment. I meant we should use what's on the cover but if there isn't a name but a logo we should use the most common cover name which is "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment".

Ah, okay - then we're on the same page! Based on all this (including checking a rather large number of actual covers), I have indeed switched to "Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment". The poll results are slightly worrying, though, but I guess that is indeed based on the current entry in the studios-thread.

I agree - the Studio Reference thread should be updated.

well, you might agree, but then again the poll shows a different result so you shouldn't start changing these yet

Well, I think the poll shows what it does because of the Studio Thread - hence my plead to change it.

If we allow Studios to be entered based on logos when text is available, we should apply the same rule for studios credited on-screen also, no?

the studio rules never forced us to use "as credited", in fact they even encouraged us to use a common name documented in the studio reference thread instead

So possibly we need a "credited as"-feature for studios as well?
