| Posted: | | | | I am a user who is frequently away from my computer, but I always keep my thumb drive and portable HDD with me. I think it would be GREAT to see DVD Profiler become a U3 app or a PortableApps.com app. I don't know if this is even possible, but for me it would be greatly because I not only take my drives with me, but I also take my DVD collection with me on the road and usually end up picking up a few new titles while away from my computer and for Me, it would be helpful to be able to pop my portable HDD or my thumb drive into my laptop or relatives computer, pull up my DVD Profiler and add new titles, mark which movies I watched and when, etc., etc. What do some other's think of this? I, personally would prefer it to be in the PortableApps format instead of U3, but all of my portable media is fairly large, and I have at least one drive running each of the two formats mentioned above, so either way would work Great for me! | | | Last edited: by chevrolet.racing252 |

| Posted: | | | | Looks like an attempt at this has been made, but it still isn't really "portable". It could be an interesting future project for someone to work with Invelos and modify a future version of DVD Profiler to be fully "PortableApps" compatible instead of just replicating the install and database to a portable drive. I figured I would ask anyway. Thanks. |

I'm confused . Doesn't DVD Profiler Mobile fill this function? not really, there is alot you can't do with the mobile version that you could with the full version. The portable apps would basically be the full desktop version that runs completely off a usb flash drive allowing you to just plug it into any computer and have access to the desktop version. When you exit out and remove your usb drive there is no trace left on the computer. -Agrare |

-Agrare Sounds cool, but I think the limitation here is the way windows works. For matters such as user authentication, authorization to data, application configuration setting persistence and other stuff only Microsoft knows about, registry settings, etc, etc. - Windows expects the application to have been installed under the auspices of a registered administrator, and then run under whatever priveleges have been granted to the program and user. Now, all that said, there is the notion of "client/server." If in fact what you are talking about is having a DVDPro client on your thumb drive that when plugged into the internet, communicates with your desktop (I assume that was what you meant by access to the desktop version?) If that's what you mean, sounds cool - "remote DVDPro DashBoard". | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! | Posted: | | | | PortableAppsIs actually a sort of portable start menu that runs off of the flash drive. There are programs available for it, that do not require any of the windows registry or what not so they can run completly off the drive, when you remove the drive nothing is left on the machine (except maybe drivers for your flash drive) I am currently running a portable version of firefox on mine (actually using it to browse these forums) I can save bookmarks, my history, cookies, etc and they are all on the drive, so even if i start it up from a different computer my keep me signed in option on this site (for example) is still there. And if I use the internet browser installed on the computer I won't be logged in. So when I said access to the desktop version, it actually would be just like running it on your desktop at home except that its all running off the flash drive. The portable apps is great for use on public computers so you don't have to worry about leaving cookies and the like around and you can have access to your programs (for instance a file compression software other than built in xp) and you don't need to install them on the computer you're at to use them. -Agrare |

I was correct in my understanding of the inhibitors, but I didn't realize how far people had come on an architecture and process for getting around them. They have a suite of tools for packaging and recommended approaches for how to modify your application to be portable. So, yes, it would mean perhaps some significant changes to DVDProfiler, but I agree they would be worthwhile and extremely useful. Ken could even sell ready-made thumbdrives with the DVD "eye" logo (or award them to 4-star rated forum members! ). | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. | Posted: | | | | That isn't a bad idea! DVD Profiler thumb drives pre-loaded with DVD Profiler Unlimited! 34.99+S&H! Fortunately for me I have a PDA that I use at the office and I have loaded the limited version of DVDProfiler Mobile on that just to see what the program is like and I like it, but personally I just can't justify the cost of purchasing a PDA and since DVD Profiler is actually free software with a few limitations, I see no reason why it couldn't be made into a portable application and since the unlimited is a registration type setup and not really a different executable than the DVD Profiler that is installed when you use the limited version, it shouldn't be a problem to have it on the drive. Personally I carry my thumb drive with me more than I do my wallet so this would really be beneficial to me to always have this with me. I have always looked at DVD Profiler as a way to keep an up-to-date record of all my movies so that if a hurricane were to hit and they were all damaged, or a fire were to start and burn my entire collection, I could easily pull a list off a thumb drive and print off for insurance claim purposes, but currently the only way for me to do that since I dont yet have the unlimited registration is to keep the install file for DVD Profiler and backup the database to my thumb drive each time I make an update where if I could simply run the program directly from my thumb drive I would not have to ask my insurance agent if I could install a program on their computer to get them the list, I could simply pop in the flash drive and run the program. I have a very small collection compared to most DVD Profiler users, but I am still pushing the 200+ mark and growing almost every other week by at least one or two titles so this is a very important program to me. |

The free version is really more of a trial version. This isn't to say Ken couldn't make it work on in a portable version if he wanted. But I doubt it would only be an additional $5 to give you a USB drive with it, especially because you'd probably need at least a gig and if your talking including a logo. cheapest 1 gig i'm seeing online is 6.99, and you have to take into account the quantity needed and getting it direct from the mfg to get that kind of price. And at 200+ dvds you really ought to consider paying the $30 (cost of about 3 dvds) for the unlimited registration. -Agrare |

| Posted: | | | | I am actually planning on purchasing the unlimited registration once I get my tax returns back in a few weeks. I have been using the software for a while now and I even used it a little before it went from Intervocative to Invelos software and the old version did have a few features that were a little more appealing to me (such as the DVD Price Comparison tool, which I used for all the movies on my wishlist so I could get the best price when I purchased them on-line.) I am not a programmer by a long shot, but what I meant by my comment that DVD Profiler is "free" software with limitations is that there isn't a seperete executable file for DVD Profiler Unlimited vs. the "Lite" version. The registration key simply unlocks the features that are already existant in the executable file, which means if someone were to install the portable DVD Profiler "Lite" and decide to upgrade to the Unlimited version, they would not have to re-install the entire program and completely recreate their database, they would simply enter the registration key in their settings and from that point on, those features would be unlocked for them. I have recommended DVD Profiler to SEVERAL of my friends and acquaintences because of the ease of use and the fact that DVDProfiler is SUCH a great program and since I merged my DVD collection with my Fiance's collection, it made it really hard to keep track of which movies we had and which ones we "thought" we had so we have really utilized this program. Not to mention the fact that her sister loves to borrow movies and never return them and then claim she brought them back, but with this we know when she took the movie and as soon as she brings it back we check it back in so we know which movies she hasn't returned, as well as how much we paid for them and where we bought them (which makes it a lot easier to re-purchase with her money when needed). |

| Posted: | | | | Hi, I own the full desktop and mobile versions for 3 years now and am watching the subject 'portable DVD Profiler version' for about two years - in this thread: and here - and was hoping all the time that there will soon come either a solution from a hobby coder, or that Ken would launch such a portable version. But sadly there's no update in this case... I can't understand, that there aren't more people, who plead for this. By now I have a 16GB USB-Stick with nearly all my most important data and programs on it, e.g.: - OpenOffice- Firefox (with my bookmarks, extensions and settings) - Thunderbird (with all my e-mails) - a lot of utilities, multimedia-, graphic- and internet programmsand some private databases with my collections integrated, e.g.: - Foobar 2000 (to play and administrate my music collection) - Kalorio (a german reciept database which originally wasn't portable too. But with some help of the community we found a solution) No matter on what computer I sit (home, notebook, work, friend, abroad,...), I can work with all my programs. Especially databases are predestinated for portable apps for having access to your data wherever you are. - But I'm still in lack of my portable DVD Profiler... The mobile DVD Profiler version is fine when I'm strolling through a DVD shop in order to verify whether I already own a film, but beyond that... *hem* ... one can't really work with it. So please folk support this idea - and please Ken rethink this idea too. You would make my USB-Stick (and me) very happy... yuki15 | | | Last edited: by yuki15 |
