John Wayne's name differs from his credited name...should we standardize that?

Do we really want to head down this path?  I sure don't.

Red herring.

We're only talking about suffixes here!

When taken out of context, as it is in that quote, I am sure it looks like a red herring.  However, that example was in response to your previous statement to Pete..."It does not say if there are variants of the person's name.  It only says if the actor's name differs from the credited name."

It may be about suffixes in this one thread, but that statement can be used to standardize every name in the db.

Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

except this poll does not over-ride the rules which tells us when we can use the credited as... and standardization is not what credited as is for at this point.

You are right, but maybe we should ask Ken for a an exception and standardize commas.

I have no problem with that... using a poll or such to see if the majority wants it... and then ask ken to put an exception into the rules is always an option. Of course then we must go with his decision... whether he says yes or no.

Then somebody will come up with something else, they want to standardize, maybe Mýa or somethjing else, then someone else will have their per standardized name and so on and pretty soon it's a mess. We have never adnd don't now standardize ANY names for ANY reason. I can't support ANY such premise under ANY circumstances, this is strictly a LOCAL issue ONLY.

We already have far more complexity than was built into the Rules and is necessary. We have started on a very slippery path.

I agree with you skip... but I don't see myself as being able to take away their right to request it if they want to try. And from there it is totally up to Ken if he wants the exception or not.

But why do we need and just how many polls do we need, pete. If they want to, fine, I guess, but we just polled this what two weeks ago. This polling game has just gotten way too silly.

and once again I agree with you... but I still would not even consider to take away their right to make a poll or the right to make a request of any sort.

Add my agreement to all of Pete's.  I think it is a bad idea to start down the 'standardization' road.  Today it is a comma, tomorrow it is the entire name.  For me, it makes more sense to use 'as credited' unless there is a variant of the credited name.

Edited to fix typo...for some reason I wrote "start the the 'standardization' road".

That's not completely true. There is already one exception, and it seems to me that no "mess" has come from that.

Quoting the Credits Rules:
Quote:
Exception: If the credit information is entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead.

The capitalization exception is very specific, and so would be a standard for commas before Jr./Sr. suffixes.

Also, we contribute Overviews "as on back cover", but we insert non-existing quotes to show italics, and no "mess" has come from that exception either.

That, enry was a very carefully considered and crafted exception to a specific issue that has nothing to do with the issue at hand, and was done for specific reasons.

That's my point.  It was a well-considered exception done for specific reasons, and it didn't lead us on a slippery path.

Because it was planned and this does put us on that slippery path, one standardized name exception leads to the next and the next and the next. No standardized names Period, no exceptions, we had the poll and it was roundly defeated. No need to go over it again, unless of course you want to do an Al Gore imitation and ask for a recount.

The "recount", as you call it, is right here at the top of the page... And guess what? Apparently things aren't so black and white as you'd like them to be.

According to The Guardian (*) "Recount shows Gore had won"...

(*) a lopsided source, I'll admit to that
