If a movie has both '20th Century Fox' and 'Twentieth Century Fox' in the opening credits, which do we use?

Probably been asked before, so flame away...

Use the one from the text credits. The logo should only be used as a fall back if there are no other studio credits. IMO the preference is text credits first, then studio names from the copyright (end credits), and logos last.

Okay, I'll play...

Personally, I use '20th Century Fox'. There are bound to be plenty of people who'll say: just enter what you see on-screen, but I certainly don't see any advantage in having both a '20th Century Fox' and a 'Twentieth Century Fox' entry in my studios list. Now that we're finally all getting used to the "credited as" system to ensure our cast and crew correctly link together, it seems utterly silly to use dozens of slight name variations for studios. To me, the principle is the same: if I click on 'Michael J. Fox', I expect to see all his appearances throughout my collection, including the few early ones where he's credited as Michael Fox. And similarly, I expect the program to be able to filter out all DVD's in my collection which were released theatrically by 20th Century Fox. I don't want to "break" that feature by having separate entries for '20th' and 'Twentieth'. The most commonly used form seems to be '20th Century Fox' (it's also quite clear from the logo), so that's what I use.

I even feel backed up on this by the rules on studios, since the rules use the phrase "correct names for studios", which would indicate that every studio indeed does have a "correct" name for DVD Profiler purposes, regardless of little variations that may show up on-screen. Why else would the rules use that phrase? Ken could have easily said: enter the studios exactly as they appear on-screen. But he didn't. I consider the "correct" name for this studio to be '20th Century Fox', and I feel the way the rules on this subject are phrased allows a 'Twentieth Century Fox' credit to be entered as '20th Century Fox'.

I realize that for some of us - guess who? - this will be another reason to cry wolf, declare anarchy, total chaos etc. But again: neither the way the rules on studios are phrased, nor the shift of focus from "as credited" to "credited as" in the cast and crew department, indicate we should just enter studios "as credited". It's just the preference of some users. I understand "as credited" is the easy way out, but if we can come to an agreement on "common names" for cast and crew, then deciding whether to use '20th Century Fox' or 'Twentieth Century Fox' shouldn't be a complete mission impossible, should it? Again, think about it: if we're all busy weeding out name variations in the cast and crew department, then why should we introduce more "name variants" in the studios department?

Why use text credits only, and not logos if these are presented first?

The text credits are the real credits IMO. And the studio fields are text fields. Logos can be difficult to convert into text form.

I agree. Logos can be helpful to determine the "correct studio name" (see my earlier post), though.

I say "Twentieth", because "20th" is just an abbreviation in the studio logo.
