Ther seem to be to spellings for the same actor. Which one should be preferred?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Neither. I believe the consensus for common name would be Thomas Rosales, Jr. with whatever the credits show as "as credited".

I agree with Max. Use the comma for the common name then use whatever's in the credits in "credited as".

Agreed. Common name should be Thomas Rosales, Jr.; if his name is spelled differently in the credits, use the "credited as" function.

This already has been decided in this poll.

This decision was made befor Ken added the following rule which indicates to use the most credited form:
Quote:
To determine whether to enter the name directly as credited, or to use the "Credited As" field, use the Credit Lookup tool.

This would be fine if one could actually rely on the database containing correct data. As it is now, the majority (or at least a LOT) of profiles in the database contain IMDB data, and the Credit Lookup Tool will in most cases therfore show the IMDB name as most commonly credited. In this case, it would show Thomas Morales Jr. as most commonly credited, as this is his "IMDB main name". This does NOT mean that this is how he's actually most commonly credited. In my (and others') experience, "juniors" are actually most commonly credited with a comma, and I believe that explains the poll result.

This is sad but unfortunately true.
But in many cases the most credited name can be found out by doing a little research.
I compare the entries for the different names for every film with the list in IMDb.

To give you a clue what I am doing I list the results of my last Common Name search with the Credit Lookup Tool for Josef Pilato:

In the first instance the Common Lookup Tool provide the following result:
Joseph Pilato 64 titles (166 profiles)
Josef Pilato 7 titles (24 profiles)
Joe Pilato 11 titles (20 profiles)
Joseph F. Pilato 1 title (1 profile)

After research I found out the following:
The numbers in () indicate the count of appearances for the film in the credit lookup tool.
The * indicates a "as credited" note in IMDb

Alienator: Joseph Pilato (1) - in the credits as: unclear
Dawn of the Dead: Joe Pilato (10), Joseph Pilato (47) - in the credits as: Probably Joe Pilato
Day of the Dead: Joe Pilato (10*), Joseph Pilato (33) - in the credits as: Sure Joe Pilato (verified by myself)
Digimon: The Movie: Joseph Pilato (2) - in the credits as: Probably Joseph Pilato
Effects: Joseph F. Pilato (1*) - in the credits as: Sure Joseph F. Pilato
Gung Ho: Josef Pilato (2), Joseph Pilato (6) - in the credits as: Probably Josef Pilato
Knightriders: Joseph F. Pilato (*), Joseph Pilato (2) - in the credits as: unclear
Married People, Single Sex: Joseph Pilato (1) - in the credits as: unclear
Music From Another Room: Josef Pilato (2*) - in the credits as: Sure Josef Pilato
Pulp Fiction: Josef Pilato (12), Joseph Pilato (60) - in the credits as: Probably Josef Pilato
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.: Josef Pilato (2*) - in the credits as: Sure Josef Pilato
The Demolitionist: Josef Pilato (1*) - in the credits as: Sure Josef Pilato
The Ghouls : Joseph Pilato (1) - in the credits as: unclear
The Last Seduction II: Josef Pilato (*), Joseph Pilato (1) - in the credits as: unclear
Wishmaster: Josef Pilato (5), Joseph Pilato (10) - in the credits as: Sure Josef Pilato (verified by myself)
Star Trek I Le Film: Joseph Pilato (2) - not credited at all, credits are from Dawn of the Dead!!

For the conclusion I use the following:
Films I own and for which I looked up the credits get a sure.
Films where IMDb states a credited as and the credit lookup tool find at least 1 film with this name get a sure.
Films where there are a few entries for a name different to IMDbs Common Name get a Probably

Conclusion:
Name - Sure (Sure+Probably)
Joe Pilato 1 (2)
Josef Pilato 4 (6)
Joseph F. Pilato 1 (1)
Joseph Pilato 0 (1)

So the common name should be Josef Pilato.

Hey that's fun, I just tried to change the profiles where the name was written without comma indicating this thread as source. Guess what happened. 4 NO's up to now. I guess I withdraw and lock the profiles.
To all of you who tried to help the Newbie (me): Thanks, but what does it help if some don't even make the effort of looking up the given sources?
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
