Some people think football [and soccer] is a matter of life and death.... I can assure them it is much more serious than that. |

| Posted: | | | | I either get "why don't you rent them" or (worse still) why don't you just download them?
Thankfully I have quite a few that I can't rent (non-local), and even a few that I reckon you'd be hard-pressed to find for download. I also point out that I want them on-call; that I want to be able to watch something on the spur of the moment. Arguments of "I want to encourage more like this and less crap" tend to fall on deaf ears.
The best response I've found though, is when I say that for movie X it's actually cheaper to have bought it than to have rented, based on the number of viewings. Most people who ask these sorts of questions usually can't understand the concept of re-watching a film.
I also like the "you spend too much on DVDs" from people who spend more on cigarettes or alcohol (or more on each individually, but buy both). My brother is the oddest case... he drinks, smokes and has a DVD collection that rivals mine in size, yet he still tells me I spend too much! | | | Adelaide Movie Buffs (info on special screenings, contests, bargains, etc. relevant to Adelaideans... and contests/bargains for other Aussies too!) |

| Posted: | | | | I've collected coins, guitars, books, stamps, comic books, Mickey Mouse figurines, records, CDs, DVDs, and other stuff throughout my life. I remember a fellow Air Force buddy & his wife visiting me (& my first wife) back when I was enlisted and on active duty. He remarked about the books on the shelves & the LPs I played "How can you afford all these books and records?"
I knew they were smokers and they often went out to bars to drink. So I said that we chose to spend our money on books and music rather than on cigarettes and booze. He began to get huffy... and I tried calming him with "Look, I'm not judging you. You choose to spend your money one way, a way you enjoy. We enjoy reading & listening to music. That's all. It's a choice everyone makes, a choice as to how they like to spend their time and money."
My DVDs are a choice I make. A DVD costs less than a few packs of smokes, and lasts me longer. A DVD costs less than a few drinks at a bar, and I don't have to worry about driving home. It's my choice, not anyone else's.
Some people buy houses and cars they cannot afford. I buy DVDs which break my checking account. We all go out with nothing... why not enjoy the ride while we exist? | | | If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

| Posted: | | | | I usually get "Do you have...?" Always followed by "Could I borrow ....?" Then I snort and walk away. I don't have many friends. | | | I was wise once; when I was born, I cried - Welsh proverb |

I know exactly what you mean. People don't understand why I rebuy all my movies in Hi-Def But I agree it is 'a bit' costly and over the top |

| Posted: | | | | My family are now starting to do the following: "Do you have.....?" if I respond in the negative, they ask why not? If I respond in the positive or with "it's on order" or "it's on it's way" they say "you spend waaaaaaaaay too much on DVD's, but can I borrow it?". I ask you!!!! The cheek! I look at it this way - I don't smoke or drink and seldom go to the movies. I also have no kids or husband to worry about - just my cat, who is not expensive, so why not? I enjoy them and will watch most more than once. I will NOT rent as I have a better collection than most of the stores in this country and am also not prepared to have to wait until new releases are available or sit on a waiting list for these. Also, I have had some items in my collection before they have even been released on our movie circuit, which I find cool! Some of my older movies have not yet been released locally and some are not likely to be, so where would I get these? | | | <---------Mithrandir, Laverne and Shirley Caroline |

| Posted: | | | | I do not justify my dvd addiction to anyone of my family or other persons. All have accepted that I'll never ever lend my dvd's. And yes, I have a wife, kids, cats, dog. I care for them at the best. But dvd's are more important for me than a brandnew car (mine is 16 yeras old but o.k.) or expensive restaurants or regular pub visits. It's just my hobby... And finally I agree very much to VibroCount, we say in GER: "the last shirt has no pockets" | | | Thorsten | | | Last edited: by kahless |
