I read in a few web site that Sony wanna do a new version of the PlayStation 3 with more power (cpu, ram, HD ...) soon.

I was consedering buying a PS3 for jan 2008 (to pass the time in the winter) But with all those rumor Im not sure if I must wait some more before buying or not?

IF that rumor is true... What the heck is Sony thinking? The best selling console right now is what? Yeah, it's Wii.. Now how powerful is that compared to X360 and PS3? That's what I thought, not much in comparison. Doesn't that tell ANYTHING about what people really want in a game console?

It's simple. They want a FUN console, and AFFORDABLE.

Man... On what planet are they living? sheesh..

Sony has a 80GB version coming out.  The 60GB will move down to where the 20GB was in price and the 80GB version will be the new 60GB.  Nothing else has been added to the 80GB versions except the addition 20GB of hard drive space.  At best they will go down to the 65nm scale for the Cell processor, but that would be across the board.

Personally, I think it's better to get the 60GB version and spend $77 shipped on a 120GB drive and use the 60GB drive for your laptop (or a spare drive).

SO...the 60GB should be around $500 or less

.......the 80GB should be around $600 or less (if it comes to the US)

Well, that doesn't matter if they raise the price on a much improved unit (improved parts means higher costs) that you don't want.  In that case, the option would exist to buy a less advanced versions.

Any SATA drive should work with the PS3.  If you want to conceal the HDD, you need to get the 2.5" SATA HDD (notebook drive).

Someone actually has a 500GB HDD on their PS3!

BTW, firmware version 1.80 comes out tomorrow that allows high quality upscaling of DVDs and PS1 & 2 games to full 1080p!

Update: Sony is kicking around the idea of a full media version of the PS3 (no way near coming out).  If made, the unit would be able to record HDTV programs from your satellite or cable provider.  I believe it would also be able to burn those recorded programs to a Blu-ray disc and have 2 HDMI video outputs.  Plus, everything else the 60GB PS3 can do.

The would have more functionality than a HTPC (home theater personal computer).  I'm sure that would cost around $1600, if it ever became a reality.  Other Blu-ray HTPCs, in Japan, with similar functions launched at around $2000.  But, as far as the near future (2007/2008) is concerned, it's not even something to consider.

That is correct, but it did not say no plans for the US.  I know the FCC document has been floating around for some time now.  That leads me to believe they may have plans for the US, but we just don't know when.

2 Updates: Sony announced they will NOT be dropping the price of the PS3 this Fall.  This is likely due to the 90 third party and 15 first party games they have coming this fiscal year.

Also, The PS3's latest firmware release (version 1.8...out NOW) includes 1080p/24Hz support along with DVD and PS1 & 2 high quality upscaling to 1080p and media server support!  I just compared it to my Oppo DVD upscaler.  The PS3 seems to have the same upscaling qualities as the Oppo.  My ISF tech said the Oppo was the best all round DVD upscaler under $2,000!

They should add some extreme power savings features, 175 watts to watch a movie is simply too much.

Maybe they could implement an Intel mobile processor just for the Blu-Ray movie watching while the rest is set to sleep?

Now that the nice lawyers at Sony and Immersion have kissed and made up, Sony will be introducing a revised SIXAXIS with rumble later this year. Even though during the litigation they took every opportunity they could to explain the SIXAXIS lacked rumble because it was such "a last-gen" feature. Gotta love desperation P.R.
