Absolutely NOT!  Anonymity translates to no accountability.  Such a moderator could do an extraordinary amount of damage before Ken could intervene and shut him down.

Wow, I agree with John. I suppose stranger things have happened.

Just wanted to clarify this. I mean that a moderator cannot participate in a thread under any user ID at all.  In other words, they cannot express an opinion here outside of the moderator function. As I said, I know this sounds hard, but it is the only way to ensure fairness.

Once again, I must disagree.  As I said, I did this for a living...meaning I got paid by companies like Invelos to moderate their forums.  None of those companies required their moderators to stop participating in the forums.  They had a moderator name and a user name.  They moderated with one and participated with the other.  Fairness was ensured by removing the moderator if they couldn't keep the two separated.

Just to continue what you were saying there, Unicus, I was a moderator for the old Virgin.net movie forums up until Virgin closed down their media content and settled for being an ISP.

Not only did I contribute, it was part of the "job". Virgin's brief for a moderator was to encourage discussions and keep them flowing. If it was a slow day, I was expected to start a couple of topics.

People appreciated seeing me there and for the most part didn't post anything malicious. If I was a silent moderator I know for a fact that it would have degenerated very quickly. Being an active participant means you can guide the conversation away from potential trouble spots.

Just as a point of reference, Unicus, since you did use me as an example.  I've been in this game long enough to know how to separate my feelings about someone from whether or not they are contributing a proper profile for example, and whether or not they are being fair in a moderated situation.  That is something else you should've noticed about me if you've really been paying attention.  I'm not a newbie by any means.  That's the last word on that from me.

Did you miss the disclaimer?  That wasn't meant as an attack on you or Hal.  I used the first two names, with a well documented history, that came to mind.  It could have been any two users with a history.  I apologize if you took it to mean something that it didn't.

Ultimate, overall responsibility is Ken's, true.  But I'm referring to the day to day handling of things.  I've seen things spin out of control in such situations in a matter of minutes, particularly in real time forums, but even in the old Fidonet days when everything traveled by packets.

I have seen it happen as well.  How does knowing who the moderators are prevent that from happening?  Known or unknown, a moderator bent on causing problems is going to cause problems.

Well, sure, if somebody goes postal it hardly matters.  But, what I meant was that your average moderator is less likely to do that sort of thing if people know who he is, in my experience.

Just wanted to make sure you realized that there is more to it than just animosity.  In fact, I probably would've said something similar regardless of the names you picked because I think it is important to realize that nobody is one dimensional.

If there were moderators on the forum, I'd wanted to know who they were, specially if they would take part in the discussion.

If Skip is made a moderator, that'll be the end of my contribution to the forum.

EDIT: This is not an attack, or an attempt to start trouble. I would not want a moderator who has repeatedly shown no respect or consideration for the other users, and who bullies in an attempt to get his way.

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture."

Seeing that that is Ken's decision, I think he his aware of all the things he is looking in a potential moderator.
I don't think that any more or less "threatening" posts will influence him. Hence the previous post was, I believe, at least, and not knowing Ken's decision,  a bit premature.

All right enough of this from you children. Has anyone seen me say much of anything on this topic, I think i made one post. let me offer a suggestion for ROSS. Has it occurred to you that Ken would have to ask me, and I would have to provide an answer. My answer FYI would be NO, I have too much to do already, there is one area I would be willing to assist Ken and gerri but it is not in the role of moderator.

So enough of the personal attacks, already. Despite your claim Ross, it was an attack and totally unnecessary. Let me also go on the record that there are few here, some but not more than a few, that I would be willing to trust with role of moderator and I shall keep them to myself.

I understand now.  You are correct that there is more to it than just animosity.    I was just attempting to give a simple example.

So much for a 'new place' and a 'new attitude'.  I guess the only slate you wanted wiped clean was your own.
