Is there such a thing as 'anamorphic' for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD

Ok, the subject should state it all.

In dvd's, anamorphic (aka enhanced for w/s tv's) was really a bodge as all dvd's are encoded at 4:3, it was how you get the image into that 4:3 box.

Now I hope that in the HD/BR world that all discs are encoded in the correct aspect ratio. Whether that is 1.85:1, 2:35:1 or anything else.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

Assuming HD/BR do it 'correctly', the follow up question to the dvdprofiler specific part of the forums would then be 'should the video format of HD/BR include "anamorphic"'. But I'll leave that one til later

Yes.  As far as I know, all high-def discs are done in the original aspect ratio.  The only exception, currently, would be Dragon's Lair (now on Blu-ray and coming soon to HD DVD).  It was originally done in a 4:3 configuration, but was edited to make it 16:9.

HD DVDs are not anamorphically enhanced; they are naturally/native 16x9 in shape.

End of story.

All HD DVD and Blu Ray are encoded at 16x9.  For other AR's, black bars are hard-coded into the image.  Anamorphic squeeze is not supported on either format to get maximum resolution from 2.35:1 movies.

It'd kind of be nice if there were an anamorphic squeeze for these formats so you could get even more resolution out of them should televisions get to that point, but Erik and Sean are correct, the pixels are fixed in both HD formats and there is no anamorphic squeeze.

Nope! The squeeze would enhance the vertical resolution, but it would lessen the horizontal, so you'd have a zero sum game.
The reason why anamorphic works on CRT-TVs is because they don't have a fixed horizontal resolution. For every pixel-based technic anamorphic squeeze is devils-work.
