I am not sure why you understood it that way but, unless something has changed recently, NR has always been the lowest Profiler rating.

Do we really want to all the direct to video gore films and action films to be the lowest rating ?
Without checking, I think 10 % of my collection would go from highest rating to lowest rating if Ken changes this.
And those will be all gore, action and other direct to video releases.

I am confused as anything with an NR rating already has the lowest rating.  NR is the lowest rating so nothing in your collection will change.

@ Ken, did I miss a change somewhere?  Was NR the highest rating at some point in the past?

I think with all the millions  of postings here I failed to make clear what I want.

So here it is:

I want NR and Unrated to be EXACTLY the same, as they are the same, there is no difference, both means there is no guidance for those titles.

And i want  the NR and Unrated to be the highest rating, below adult of course.

But I do NOT want a distinction between NR and Unrated.

You may not want a distinction between "Not Rated" and "Unrated", but the fact is that for the vast majority of films, they are different.

"Not Rated" will almost always mean that the MPAA did not exist (pre-1968) at the time the film was made and therefore it was "not rated" by them.

"Unrated" will almost always mean that the release it appears on came out post-1968, originally had a MPAA rating, but this particular cut was not submitted to the MPAA, and therefore, it is "unrated".

I know it sounds like semantics, but, for pre-1968 films, virtually all would be rated "G".  For alternate cuts of previously rated films, virtually all would be rated higher than PG-13.

I will repeat the analogy I just used for your argument

I believe that the higher rating is far more informative than the lower rating. If you NEED the rating, how embarassed would you be if you plugged in a film that should have been rated a HARD R but simply had a Not Rated and you were playing it because your child wanted to see it and you just went merrily along, after all it's Not rated and Profiler says Not rated is the lowest rating juast because of all those old TV show, wait a minute what is that guy doing to that girl if this the lowest rating...and your child is watching.  I submit that is far more important a piece of information than all of those old TV shows that carry the same ratiing, but are really G or PG.

Why do I acre that a bunch of pre-1968 movie would be rated G, is that relevant or am I trtying to protect my children, not from family fare, but from fare which i deem inappropriate to them.  That's really a funny argument hal, that you are more concerned about G rated fare than what might be appropriate for younger eyes and minds. Whew, that is so funny it is really hard  for me to wrap my mind around it, wow

hal is a DINK, so can't answer that question.  I, however, am not, so can.  This situation would never happen in my house.  I know, just by looking at the title, what films are and aren't appropriate for each of my children.  If, for the sake of argument, I didn't know whether or not it was appropriate, they would't watch it.

This is a concept I just can't wrap my head around.  I don't need NR to be the highest rating in order to protect my children.  I use my first hand knowledge, of the contents of the DVD, to do that.

If everybody thought like you and I there woukd be no issue here, absolutely none. But eveidently some are incapable of functioning without some nanny telling them what they can watch. But like I said if there is a concern, the concern should not be about the general fare but the fare at the other end of the spectrum.

I resemble that remark!

I may not have any kids, but I do have my wife's grandmother living with me and a mother who visits often, so I do need to exercise caution when it comes to putting a disc in the DVD player.

Like TheMadMartian, I never put anything in the machine that I do not personally know is suitable when either of those two ladies is present.  I would never rely on a rating in DVDP to make such a decision.

What's the single person equivalent of DINK?

Like you guys, I know what is and isn't acceptable to loan to my friend Christi for her kids to watch, by looking at the title, from watching movies, from reading about them, from looking at the overviews, etc.  If it was questionable I wouldn't loan it to her.  If I had kids, again, I know what I'd let them watch and what I wouldn't.  I wouldn't have to rely on DVDP to decide that.

But I understand that issue.  I look at what Charlie said, about his wife not being the film buff and relying on parental control to allow watching.  I think about letting Christi house-sit for me if I go on vacation.  If I print out a list of films that are appropriate for the kids to pick from, as it stands now, I would likely get some inappropriate ones listed.

My biggest problem is I'm terribly OCD.  I want things in categories.  I want films in each category - whether that category is genre, or rating, or what-have-you - to match, to belong together in the category.  And right now they don't.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

In my case, it's not a matter of needing to be able to blindly trust Profiler so much as needing to be able to set the correct pool for movie pick. It's not much good if you have to re-pick a dozen times.

I also understand the issue, but we are talking about two different issues here.

The first issue is the addition of an 'Unrated' rating so that we can enter what is listed on the case.
The second issue is one of age appropriateness.

No matter what happens concerning the first, the second issue will still exist.  Currently, NR is the lowest rating.  Adding an 'Unrated' rating will not change that.  What it will do, however, is allow for the rating data to be accurate.  The topic of age appropriateness is a separate issue.

It shouldn't be. Age appropriateness is the whole point of a rating system. Otherwise, it's not any more useful data to track than the color of the text on the cover.

ALWAYS enter what you see on the cover for contribution purposes.

That's the least ideal scenario in my opinion.  I have a big pile of movies today that are NR.  I'd like to sort those into two piles.  One containing harmless material and one that is more mature or grown up in nature.  One pile I'd let a 5 year old pick from, the other I wouldn't.  Or one pile I'd be interested in on a Friday night and the other would be boring.  However you choose to look at it.

Why only 2 piles? Where is the pile a 15 year old could choose from? Where is the pile a 13 year old could choose from?

I will repost this from the other thread.

I actually left this argument awhile back

Right now, I am of the mind....

Ken---make a decision.

It is obvious that you are not going to please everybody.

I think the direction that this is going is wrong.  I will not reiterate my reasons why. I think that maybe this is something that should be dealt with in a program update.

There are people here that will lock down the ratings section and do what they want.  It is a shame.  The only things that I have ever locked down on a regular basis, has been images and disc info.  Now for the first time, I may very well lock out almost a complete piece of info from the DB.

But a decision needs to be made, so we know what to do.  All that needs to be said has been said.  The arguments now are not producing anything new.

PLEASE... decide.

I absolutely agree, all arguments are just only going back and forth now, a decision should be made.

Charlie, why do you think it is  shame that people (including myself) will lock down the rating section ?
I findit quite logical to lock down something that I absolutely cannot agree on
