OK, Got my IPHONE 4 today!!! YA!!!  As a Long time DVD Profiler Owner and Mobile version owner, I can't wait for the Iphone/Ipad version.  Where is it?  Can I Beta test it???  I don't want to have to keep dragging out my PocketPC.

Seriously, the longer it's in development the less likely it is going to work with current iPhones.  Since you can expect a new generation of iPhone annually and a useful life of 18 months or so, the development for this app has to be a lot faster than one year.  It does no good to have it come out now for the original iPhone; no one is using those any more.

I agree - it's taking far too long. With iphone / itouch apps you expect the version to change frequently due to unexpected bugs (as well as new developments). If Ken is wanting to spend a couple of years developing this then he doesn't understand the different development model.

I have the other iphone app and that gave me my list of dvds (it doesn't work now with the os4 - until it gets updated) - but the fact is that could come out very quickly. Why not an official version?

I have that app, but have switched to another one because it seemed abandoned for a long time.  That said, I agree with you completely, especially in regards to your comment about the frequency of updates. Particularly with this vibrant and loyal of a user base, I'm surprised even a phased version hasn't been made available.  If nothing else, Apple's "in-app purchases" offers the opportunity for a very limited .99 or 1.99 version could be made available with additional features offered for sale as in-app purchase as developed.

To fill my needs I've already gone through a few alternatives -- some free, some not.  There's a good chance that the final official app will blow my doors off and I'll cave, but having now already spent on alternatives (yes, that's my choice and no one put a gun to my head) I'm willing to spend that much less.  The long wait along with the lack of any detail (is there even an alpha version?), time horizon, active response to community feedback has worn away my enthusiasm.  For now, anyway.

If it's the Imovies collection in this thread then apparently he submitted the Os4 update a week ago and Apple are just sitting on it.

This app does for me until something better comes along. And I really hope Ken hasn't decided to do the full / bells and whistles / everything and the kitchen sink version in 2 years rather than do something more simple now version.

The update is out now; I expect Apple is swamped with app developers updates for iOS4a and the little ones like Samuel are the bottom priority.

Ok, I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of info, given we were told almost three months ago that more info was coming soon... but this development time argument doesn't make sense.

All versions of the iPhone use the same OS. Yes, certain features may be specific to a version of the iPhone given that later models have more features... and yes, when a major update comes out SOME apps need a small update to function (small meaning it's a relatively simple update for the developer)... but Ken isn't going to have to code a whole new app each time an iPhone comes out.

You do realize that each time an update comes out for an iPhone app you use, it didn't mean the developer had to start from scratch to make it.

As for the other iOS DVD app, as far as I know the app simply scrapes the info from your DVDP web list. That type of app is nowhere near as complicated to create as a full fledged mobile version of DVD Profiler.

Am I the only one here who thinks it's a tad disrespectful to post about other products/apps in this thread?  You aren't requesting features in those apps, just mentioning them and giving your opinion on app development as if you know anything about it.

I'm sure the app, when released, is going to be fantastic.

Crikey! Make a simple observation...

Checked out the myriad of responses which led me to the my movies rack app. Loaded up my list, does nothing else but at least I now have the list on my I phone & I pad. Cheap interim.

Occurs to me that, if there were a way of confirming/proving ownership of a particular movie DVD (as in knowing/entering the EAN? For example) would it then be possible to access an Invelos database which held a copy of the movie you had previously purchased?  The Invelos app (should it appear before the rivers run dry etc) could be a perfect link to such a secure internet accessed database.  Alternatively I could sell one or two of the kids and buy a Kalaidescape 3U DVD server which stores up to 3000 dvd's, load Em up and get my shelves back.

In the meantime.....

Hoping this app is released soon. I have sold my WinMo device (and hence lost access to the DVDProMobile I paid for) and now have an iPhone (3Gs) and iPad. Hope it's released soon and not held over for 'new' hardware!

It's going to work on your iPhone, its not going to be held over for new hardware, it's not being "developed for" the original iPhone only...

A developer doesn't sit down to make an iPhone app and only allow it to work on one version of the phone... if it runs on iOS it'll work on all iPhones and iPod Touches. The compatibility problems people have with apps isn't because of new hardware (unless the app requires a new piece of tech older phones don't have, like the gyroscope), it's because of the new versions of iOS (the operating system). If there is an issues, a developer will release a fix and it will work on the new version of the OS... It doesn't stop working on older phones or older versions of the OS.

People need to relax, and stop panicking.

I notice that if you try to personalise a title (Ctrl+P) that under Exclusions it says "Exclude from DVD Profile for iphone". This is in version 3.6.3 so it cannot be far off, or?

I appreciate the "don't panic" sentiments but to be fair we have been dangling waiting for this app for what must be gettig on for 12 months now?
I bought a WinMo device for DVDPro, I run VMMachine on my MBP just for DVDPro. Having had to sell my WinMo I'm just so damn eager to get it on iPhone and iPad!

Ken, I'm sure you are following this thread.  What I'm not sure of is what you are thinking about all the comments that have been made so far.

Back in April, you said 'Note: To be clear, we still have much work to be done before release.  More info will be out soon'.  Can you qualify that statement please?  What constitutes 'soon'?

Whilst I am happy to wait for profiler to come out on the iPhone, please bear in mind that I am over 60 years of age and I don't have that long to go!!!!!

Surely you can issue a short statement about the progress of the app, given the anticipation that is obvious from the posts in this thread.  I think you are doing us, your loyal followers, a disservice by treating us like mushrooms, keeping us in the dark and feeding us BS.
