We have only the contributors to blame!

The system was made by, and for, less than one hundred guys for whom contribution is a hobby. We have thousands of guys whose hobby is to watch movies, and from time to time, when they build or make a change to their profiles, the system asks them whether they want to contribute. Thousands of "normal" users will never behave as nit-picking specialists.

If you want a system that works for everybody, it must not be designed to be used by specialists.

Well, your idea will NEVER make it usable or accessible by everybody, because you have no standards for data entry. That was true three years ago and it is still true today. What you would would be one big mess.

Nobody forces anyone to make contributions.

If you can't do it properly, don't bother!

OK. You convinced me. We have a perfect system, and saying here that contributors are lazy will solve everything. Go ahead to a perfect database...

BULL, thast's is basically what we used to have.  Been there, done that, don't want to go back.(...)

I don't know, if I like surfeur51's proposal. But there is a big difference between his proposal and what we used to have. The big difference is the voting system. Unfortunately we have never had the possibility to try out the old guidelines with the new voting system. I guess that the most important feature of the current system is the voting and screening part. IMO this part is much more important than having absolutely strict rules without any wiggle room.

No standards for voting end result a garbage can database. Users can contribute anything they want and if they get the votes then it's all good...NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Certainly far superior to anything you have ever proposed Yves. It may not be perfect, nothing ever is, but yours is not even in the ball park. Back to the ping-pong tables, NO THANKS

At least the basic information should be contributable by most members of the community. Otherwise smaller localities than the US would have problems finding enough contributors.

9 profiles for Avatar currently sporting Zoe Saldana instead of Zoë Saldana. And not all from the smaller localities. One U.S. and one Canadian profile are using that name... How... annoying...

How is she credited in Avatar?  Is it Zoe or Zoë?  If it is Zoe, it is quite appropriate to enter her as such.

Umm Rho, they are also NOT required to submit Full profiles so if somebody only wants to contribute what they consider basic and they do it by the Rules, then it's cool. So, do you have any other excuses.

The screening system and the voting system are completely unreliable when it comes to cast and crew..  Very, very few people are going to check cast and crew against actual credits when voting, and there is no way the screeners could possibly do this.

Not to mention that "new" profiles are not even voted on!

That's why I'd like to see shared cast & crew amongst all profiles for a film (with the ability to override for local variations). That way everyone who owns the film can see the same data regardless of whether it's the same dvd or not.

I'd also like to see a complete ban on cast & crew data in new submissions. Stuff like that should really go through the voting system.

The part in italics is an interesting concept, north, I am trying to picture it functioning in real life.

The most famous example I can think of right off hand, is not a local variation but a version variation. In the Con Air original release the credit read Dave Chapelle and in the later SE version it read David Chapelle, or was it the other way around...but you get the idea.

An old suggestion, but still a good idea. As these 'Avatar' profiles show, there's probably no chance we'll ever ban out IMDb-data (and, as a consequence, also keep propagating incorrect IMDb-common names) any other way.

Thanks.  The case, at least the one I looked at, said 'ZOE' so I was wondering.
