Maybe that is why contributable custom credits is the way to go.

That has been my opinion for a while now...keep the categories we have, but allow for the custom role field to be contributed.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

As if the database wasn't enough of a mess already...
You can use the term you want in your own database so do it. What is the big deal with that? If you want to contribute just use the term we do and if this is too much works just don't contribute. The last time I check having 0 or 10000 contributions doesn't make someone better or awesome.

Sometimes big deal are really done here out of nothing...

It's a big deal because we have to shoehorn people into the existing options, which frequently don't fit.

IMHO, the problem is that people keep believing that we have to shoehorn people into the existing options, which is not the case at all. We have custom crew options, so if something you'd like to track doesn't fit, then we don't have to shoehorn it in, but we can use the local-only custom crew option instead. Unfortunately, many users seem hesitant to use this, and instead keep shoehorning way too many different jobs into the crew sections we have.

That's because we'd prefer to benefit from the efforts of the community and not everyone enter all the crew themselves.

Maybe it's because shoehorning is officially sanctioned by the rules. You need only lock at the jobs allowed for Costume Desinger to throw a small fit.

And we can do that for all the credits that do fit one of the existing categories. But that's not the same as "feel free to force your personal preference onto the online database, regardless of whether those credits actually fit the existing categories".

I agree - and have agreed since day one - that the rules are making a HUGE mistake with that.

As mentioned earlier, DVDP is a user contributable database.  Not so user contributable if everyone has to do local modifications.

Well, Mr. Video, the answer has been provided and discussed much in this thread. It's not about bringing the program into the current century. It's about correcting a flaw in the system that was created long ago and continues to this day, and even gets worse almost with each passing day. But even so the question is two-fold, first off should we use an open credit system, there are those who argue for it, in spite of the nightmares, and there are those who will argue against it because of the nightmares. If we go to some other form of open credits how can we both capture the data and limit it at the same time. I promise you that under a limited system of some sort, there will always be those users who will be upset that we cannot capture X piece of data correctly or at all.

I know that were it me writing the program I would have long ago taken the shackles off the Crew data and siad that we have Open Credits  you can enter as much or as little Crew data as you wish, just type what you see On Screen. I would have also modified the update system in such a way that you could update as little or as much of that Crew data as you might wish. If all you are interested in is directors, then is all you will update, if you want more  you can get more. It should probably be a one-time check box so that you don't have scruinize or make the decision on each and every title in your update any data other than that which you are interested in but...it's not my thing. I have to wait and see what comes down the pipe
ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!!
