You are going the wrong way, james. Do that in an update, not a Contribution, when it comes to cast and crew we have to take what's offered or NOTHING. Whta if i like your basic data for cast and crew but for whatever reason i am not interested in your name links and/or BY data. I think the user simply wants to be able eliminate those if he chooses and i think it's a very reasonable suggestion.

That isn't how I read the request.  The way I read it is this...

You are auditing a title, entering cast and crew, and come across 'Dave Smith as Guy in Crowd'.  You start to enter him and find out he is already in your db.  You look at that profile and find 'Dave Smith as Man on Street'.  You don't know whether or not they are the same person so don't want them to link.  Unfortunately, because they aren't ever 'D' listers, you can't find any information on them.  Because of that, there is no way to prevent them from linkiing.  Yes, you can create a fake BY, but that isn't really ideal.  What xradman wants is a checkbox that would prevent the two people from linking.

The question James has...Pete, Karsten and I have the same question...is, since they are 'Joe Nobodys', does it really matter if they link?

Edit: I see xradman was posting while I was and I did read it correctly.

Well I agree, i can see this problem with Joe Nobodys, particularly since it is unlikely that we will be able to obtain a BY. This actually takes me back to the period shortly after the implementation of the BY data and we rapidly discovered the problem, an alternative to BY was suggested for such instances, use of the earliest obtainable data regarding the person's resume, if you can't find a BY, but can determine that apparently his recorded appearance in a film as cast or crew was let's say 1980, use that as an alternative to BY, naturally this would have to be documented AND mentioned in the Notes.

For me it does. I have a ton of low-budget horror films where many of the actors would not be considered "D" actors, and some of these actors are also in big budget films/tv shows as "man in street".

I would like them to link painlessly, and the lesser known they are, obtaining a birth year is damn hard.

Granted, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

Now I can understand why people wouldn't want it because to some it just doesn't matter, and that's fine. However, since it doesn't matter to you (general you) that it doesn't link, I can't see why it would matter to you if it does. Does that make sense? I mean if some people don't like apples, the grocery store shouldn't stop carrying them altogether because there are still some people that do, even if it's a minority (which we really wouldn't know because the majority of Profiler users don't post in this forum, I would assume). Because, at the end of the day, if you don't want the apples, don't buy them, but I like apples so the option is still there for me.

However, I'm also realistic enough to know this isn't going to be fixed until another way of differentiating between two different actors is implemented that is more realistic than the DOB. I would LOVE to download the cast and crew from the Profiler database, but for linking [dead horse] it's horrendous [/dead horse] for me. If something along the lines of the way IMDB separates actors is kicked in on Profiler, it would be useful to everyone. Those who don't care won't be affected, those that do will be happy (or happier).

Don't misunderstand; I feel your pain. I would love nothing better than to see a workable link system, but under the current system of setting a Priority Name based upon user input, and thorough documentation is not required, I simply don't know how we achieve that. With simple association, I think it could happen, but not based on what we have right now.
