I had tried that in my local, too, to change the title to "?", leaving the Sort Title as "Pi", but no go.

So much for ?reference.

On Topic:

The credit block says "KISS KISS, BANG BANG", so it would be "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" were it in my collection.  Style be hanged.

And this is the biggest problem with the database and the reason why it is useless... No reasons to contribute on something a user doesn't own.

I suppose that some like to see their name and have 24865 contributions in their name

Why does this seem to bug you so much? Jealousy?

Oh, BTW: What about numbers that substitute letters? Should they be altered, or kept?

When this was talked about in the rules committee forum Gerri stated that if what is seen on the front cover it can be typed on a standard keyboard (without going to the character map) then it is to be used in the title.

So if front cover shows  Se7en the title should be Se7en.

Examples stated in that thread...

M*A*S*H would be correct (as that is how it is on the case)
J*A*G would not since the cover shows a regular 5 point star in between the letters.

Sounds fair enough, but does "standard keyboard" mean "standard english keyboard, in windows", then? I don't know what Greek keyboard looks like, but I really don't think they have any problem typing the Pi-symbol

OK, so "Layer Cake" should be changed to "L4yer Cake", then? But "Lucky Number Slevin" should not be changed to "Lucky Number S7evin", since the 7 is up side down on the cover?

To my memory she just said standard board without having to go to the character map... so I would take it she was only considering the English keyboards. But I could be remembering wrong... maybe someone else remembers a little better?

OK.

I know I'm sorta tapping the lid of a can of worms here, so I'm almost afraid to ask - but what about international characters, up side down or mirrored characters and anything that's supposed to resemble a character?

Here, the first B is mirrored, and I'm pretty sure this is written as "Abba: The Movie" in the database. If letters can be turned, why not numbers?

Then there's Brother Bear:

This looks like an up side down ö, but the title isn't Bröther Bear in the db.

And of course the Stargate TV-series:

If one accepts that the two-legged symbol is supposed to be an "A", then the ring above it turns it into "Å", but I haven't seen any Stargåte entries.

I know I'm a bit silly here. Of course it's Brother Bear, as ö isn't used as a letter in English. But what about in Finnish? The Finnish cover look like this:

Ö is used as a letter in Finnish, so it's not instantly obvious if the title is Köda or Koda (except that Köda isn't actually a word, of course, and I'm sure Disney Finland would've removed the umlauts if there was any real chance of confusion).

But that sorta brings me to the next, truly big can of worms...

International characters like æ, ø, å, ä, ë, ö etc. are already being used on international titles. Especially on releases that have non-english localities. These characters are available on standard keyboards in that locality. Now - what about Japanese or Chinese movies (or pretty much any release in any country that doesn't use the latin alphabet)? AFAIU, the db doesn't support Unicode yet, so this isn't really an issue just yet. But some day it surely will, and it'll be weird if a cover that looks identical in all localities will have different names in the db, depending on how easily accessible the characters are on a standard keyboard in that locale.

Wow, you really can't help yourself can you?  I certainly hope the moderators, and the community, take note that you contribute nothing except digs at Skip.

I will give Skip    for not taking the bait.

These three statements

Quote:
Check capitalization of the title.

For English titles do not capitalize joining words such as "of", "the", "a", "in", etc. unless they are the first, last or only word of the title. "Lord of the Rings" is correctly capitalized. "Lord Of The Rings" is not. "The Matrix Reloaded" is correctly capitalized. "The matrix reloaded" is not.

For non-English titles, use capitalization rules common to the language of the title. “Tout va bien” is correctly capitalized. “Tout Va Bien” is not.

tell me that I should use English capitalization rules for titles. If I were wrong in that assessment it would mean that we copy English titles the way they are on the cover and for every other language we use the "capitalization rules common to the language of the title". Sense that would make none.

Back to the topic at hand, this logic makes the most sense.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.

Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

Wow, yet another thread posted by T!M derailed into a disapproval of T!M's occasional non-ownership contributions. Can't believe how often this comes up...    I agree with Sam, and it was well put, a correct contribution is a correct contribution no matter where the person got the information.

On the subject at hand, I'd go with "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and agree with T!Ms sentiments in that we have the cover scans to show formatting. The simple text title is meant to show what the title actually is. For example, if you were to write your friend and recommend a movie to him/her, would you write "You really have to see this cool movie I saw, it's called Kiss kISS bAng banG!". No, you would write "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" more than likely. This might not be the best way of putting it however and I doubt my statements will convince any of you hardliners, but it just doesn't make sense to me to do it any other way.

I'm also of the opinion to type things like M*A*S*H differently too though, and maybe I'm in the minority there, but anything like this example only causes problems for people trying to do a search for the title. No one is going to think to put stars between the letters when searching out this title. Or Richie Rich for instance... R$chie R$ch as I've been told is how many are in the database. I don't see how this carrying over the formatting into the title field makes our program any better. It only causes people frustration when using the search function.

I realize the last two examples aren't quite the same as this one since any variation of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang will pop up in the search function, but it follows the same belief of hanging formatting for simple to use titles. Cover scans are there for a reason.  You can look at the crazy symbols and formatting whenever you want.

All I can tell you is what Gerri (Invelos) said at the time when this was discussed in the rules forum... which is basically if it can be done without needing to go into the character map (or using codes) then we do it. If it can not then we don't. I don't know what to tell you more then that. But I have to say it seems simple enough to me.
