This is on of the many reasons why the simple association system works best. You do not have to know every variant, onec your associations are made just type in one variant, any variant and you will get the exact same results for all possibilities.

All well and good, but how would you do that?

Only very few of those 113 credits do actually use the Common Name
"Penélope Cruz" [Penelope Cruz],
thus only those very few ones do link.

So they're wrong, and need to be fixed. This happens because there are still many people who feel, as someone posted in another thread earlier today, that "you really can't wrong by entering it as credited". But you can: as soon as you realize that a common name is needed, not doing so IS wrong, and deserves a no-vote every time. If people keep voting "yes" to strictly-as-credited contributions, more non-linking entries will be added to the database. I have already learned a long time ago to be VERY suspicious when I see a profile (or a contribution) without a single use of "credited as": that's usually a sure sign that the profile is in desperate need of an audit.

That is not why this happens.  This happens because, prior to the 'credited as' system, we entered every single credit 'as credited'.  Those entries will remain 'as credited' until someone comes along and audits the title.  Even then they might remain if that someone doesn't know there is a variation with an accent.

The problem with our current system is that it relies on someone knowing that there is a different name floating around out there.  If, by whatever miracle, that person finds out there is a different version out there, they have to...

  • document that the names do, in fact, refer to the same person.

  • check the CLT results to find the most commonly credited form.

  • check to make sure that the CLT results are correct.

  • I am sorry, but the average user isn't going to jump through those hoops.

    I have explained this many times but i will try again

    Our current system which is based on users input data with no prejudice, simply as the data exists works like this

    NameA=NameB AND Name C AND Name D
    Name A is the most commonly credited name, which may and often is incorrect due to a number of different factors.

    Simple Association works like this

    NameA=NameB=NameC-NameD

    There is no preference, once the association is set up, it makes NO difference which name you search on the results will be the same list of films. They could be setup in some sort of priority if so desired by the user, for example I search on NameC, that name would be at the top of the listing with the rest being shown in order of frequency. It is a much simpler system and near bulletproof since it is not dependent on any kind of a Priority name.

    I may be wrong, but I don't think that was what was being asked.  To me it was a question of how that would actually be implemented, as opposed to querying what was intended.

    If that was the intended question, it may not e implemented because i suspect we have to start from scratch. I can't think of anyway it could be implemented from where we are right noiw.

    Well, I won't disagree with you there. But it IS indeed our current system. It's not easy, it's not perfect, but it's what we've got. I, for one, am busy working with that to the best of my ability every single day.

    This has been discussed so many times before.
    Rules say: Enter exactly as credited in credits, even if there is a typo.

    I do not know why this is discussed every few month

    It's not a small thing to start contributing when you are new to this thing. This community  is quite unforgiving for that matter and that scares off most "average" users for good.

    Agreed that making correct contributions is not easy and that not all forum members are equally helpful to newbies, Raymond, but SOME are (iincluding myself, I'd like to think...).

    My point was that I think there are more users NOT contributing than there are contributing.
