Quote: Quoting m.cellophane: Whoa! I thought I was losing it when that happened to me. (I could still be losing it, but... ) I experienced that today in FF. My general habit it to view the list of Today's Active Topics and then open tabs for threads I want to check out. I cast a vote today and ended up in a different thread.
Oh, I'm not alone. This happened to me yesterday using firefox 2.0.0.11. Maybe a cookie issue? Even if you stay in the thread you end up at the top of the thread instead of the post you voted on. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. Users who use multiple browsing windows have always been a bane to web developers! I agree. That's exactly what I think is happening. The work-around of course is to open the voting screen in a separate tab. | | | Get the CSVExport and Database Query plug-ins here. Create fake parent profiles to organize your collection. |

Going back and re-reading through, I see now what he was saying. I missed the sarcasm. I thought he was making it a statement that contributions were personal and this is just the way voting is. My bad, Enry. No worries, mate. However, maybe that statement of mine was too much of a generalization. I don't mean to say that everybody behaves that way. But, let's face it, it can get personal. Of course that would be wrong, it goes without saying. Once a user got mad with me in PM because I (among others) turned down his cover image contribution, and my trying to peacefully explain why... just didn't help! I am sure he would have used the red button if he could at the time. On the other hand, the green button could be seen as a sugar lump to reward an "easy" Yes (again: not everybody, but not so uncommon either), and that would be wrong too. On the whole, the Reputation System applied to Contributions might result in even more Yes votes and fewer No votes because of the fear of reactions. Or maybe I am just worrying too much and should have dinner now. | | | -- Enry |

Or maybe I am just worrying too much and should have dinner now. I do not think it is a generalization - we have had users openly confess in the forums that if they see a contribution made by "Mr. X" or "Mrs. Y", they will automatically vote no. This - along with the ever-present war going on in the forums, is a clear indication that things have gotten way too personal, and that the focus is not longer on the value of having good (and correct) data. Don't misunderstand me - I am not directing this post at you, Enry (nor my previous agreement with Vega), but rather at the community as a whole, as I feel we all need to reassess our approach to this program and the way we choose to be a part of it. | | | Berak

| Posted: | | | | Ken, one thing that isn't clear - unless I missed your clarification in amongst all 28 pages of other posts..
What happens if a rude post is negatively rated and then the original poster reconsiders and changes their original post so all is sweetness and light..
Does the original negative rating remain - and if so, would the original posting still be visible to you so the negative rating was just removed since although it was a correct rating at the time, it no longer is when you come to review it? Or would it just look like a vindictive negative rating and get reversed? | | | Paul |

what do you mean? Is this some sort of Canadian expression?
If you mean that answering queries is pandering, then I'm a little puzzled as o why.. "Gag me with a spoon" is Valley girl speak meaning that I am so sick of something that I would wish to stick a spoon down my throat to get rid of it. Not a pleasant aspect, but preferable to all the overly polite responses we are now seeing. Nobody says anything any longer that can in anyway be misconstrued as being objectionable. If something is written that perhaps might be misinterpreted as offensive then it is accompanied by a smiley face. Or it is prefaced by some pleasantry. There must be a happy medium between, what was, out and out disgraceful behavior, and the namby pamby stuff we are now having to stomach. | | | Graham |
