I would agree that the current rules don't allow for this to be included as a credit.  However, I think it's worth considering a change that would allow a title possessive to translate into an OMB credit.

The question I would have is how often these possessives are indicating some other relationship that wouldn't classically go under OMB.

Clearly, they do not always indicate the author of the original work.  Sometimes, it's a producer, sometimes a Director.

In these two cases, it clearly refers to the author of the book on which the movie was based, along with others like "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein".

I think some documentation of the original material in the contribution notes should suffice.

Isn't there also times when it is actually part of the title and the name being a character name. I think it could get pretty confusing myself.

If it's part of the title, it'll be inside the quotes in the credit block.

My problem is, when they are not part of the title, they get no credit in DVDP when clearly, they deserve one.

but can you always go by that? I saw many Stephen King movies have his name in the quotes with the title. And yet every so often I am being told it is still not part of the title... and they hate the possessive rule because of it.

For DVDP purposes, it's cut and dry: if it's inside the quotes in the credit block, it goes in the Title field.

How often are these listed only in the title, and in neither the credit block nor the credits?

I realize this Hal... but is that enough to say it goes into the title but not the credits? I know how some people think and would say it belongs in both.

Ahhh....I understand you now.  I would be fine if the Rule were written such that it only gets an OMB when it is not part of the title (not inside the quotes in the credit block).  But I could live with it both places, as well.

The possessives should NEVER have been eliminated to begin with, at least not on the basis of some user's disliking the data. Data is data. We had a debate over Brannagh'sd version of hamlet which is shown as William Shakespeare's hamlet and the bard receives no ther credit. I was told flat out that OMB was incorrect, he isn't credited..

MNO!!!!!!!!!Not if this way then that way, not conditionals,

Let's just cause more chaos.  NO! Just get rid of the prohibition on possessives and follow the data.

I don't think reversing the position on possessives is the right way to go.  Perhaps a possessives field (optionally shown as part of the title locally) would be the way to go.

I like that Ken... As I always preferred the possessive in the title myself... though I know not everyone did. having it optionally shown as part of the title  locally (and hopefully in our online database as well) would be cool.
