I believe this is obviously well within the rules, but then I don't have especially strong feelings about the order of genres.

I agree with this. If someone took the time to do a wide contribution, and re-order the genres, it doesn't bother me at all and I'll vote yes every time. I can just decline the genre change when I download it.

I have to vote yes, Alien, I don't have to approve and I don't, such an update will never touch my data. It just hits as some user who wants the Online to reflect HIS preference and I never approve of that.

You can roll your eyes all you want. Do you have any idea how many times this exact topic has been brought up. There is nothing new in Profiler, I can almost guarantee it, if you think it, it has come up, and been discussed, cussed, recussed and discussed some more...MANY times.

But that is HIS choice, there is nothing that WE can do about that. So why is it here, it bel;ongs in Feature request. AND that too has been requested, along with removal of Classic and Television and even Special Interest. It comes down to what the Rules say

Genres are often a matter of personal interpretation, which can differ among users. If your personal preference for Genre differs from the main database, you can store the information you prefer in your local database and lock the Genre field from further updates. Do not make contributions that only change or re-order Genres, unless the existing Genre list is blatantly incorrect.

I don't think contributing in alphabetical order is the right answer, but I would consider a specific global ranking, if we can agree on one.  So (for instance) the more specific genres would be ranked higher and would sort first.  The lesser ones such as Television would sort last.

I would agree on Television, Ken. In fact, I would have done that from the beginning, but that's me. There are those that won't. As to ordering otherwise how do you decide whether it is Comedy/Romance or Romance/Comedy....that one I don't know or care. I will do it my way and whatever is in the Online is fine if the data is the same...it's the same. As I said I find re-ordering of genre, under any circumstance to be utterly useless. I THINK it is merely somebody, in a wider Contribution. simply using the Rules to impose their personal preference on the Online because they can in that circumsrtance...and that is something I never approve of.

Just my never HO

I would do things however you want them to be done Ken... but to me at least... If Television is to be considered a genre to me any series is first and foremost Television before it is anything like sci-fi, comedy or what have you. That is my personal opinion at least.

And another thing that would have me worried about ranking Television last... where this is important information (even if it is in the wrong area of the program).... that we will have people saying there is 3 "real" genres to be added that is more important then Television and then Television not being listed at all in the online database.

That's my opinion as well, which is why I think that if any kind of pre-defined ordering takes place it should be alphabetical rather than ranked. Because it's such a subjective area, you'll be highly unlikely to get even half the people to agree on a ranked order let alone everyone.

I was going to add my opinion, but Pete said everything I was thinking, so I will just go with...I agree with Pete.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

I always put TV or Classic last.  First I want to know if it is a comedy, drama, sci fi or horror, before I worry about whether it was on TV or not.  I agree that it should not be deleted in favor of "other" genres, but should always appear in the last slot.
