Quote: In fact they don't. There is a general rule and a special rule. And as I learned at university the special rule always supersedes the general rule (if it fits the circumstances). So if there is a nickname credited, the first rule to look for is the one that handles nicknames, if there is none, use the general rule. Leading the section with the 'nickname' Rule is the sentence:Quote: In addition to the above, the following rules should be followed: So the two Rules together must 'add' up to the solution (which in this case is either Zero or an imaginary number ). Sorry, I tend to forget that "Common Sense" isn't the same evrywhere. I guess I just found another windmill. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Forget_the_Rest: Quote: The way I'm reading them is that for just your average credits, copy them 100% as seen. The extra section is for when there are bits that aren't the norm. So here, although the credits show the nickname at the end of the last name, the Rules tell us to put it in the middle name field. So this one name otu of all in the database gets to be Not credited as found on screen? Quote: Edit: Following from your train of thought, this part of the rule also can't be followed -
Quote:
If puppeteers are included in the end credits include them and append (puppeteer) at the end of the role. Unless the role itself has "(puppeteer)" we shouldn't be adding it. That is why this section overrides the former. It's appended to the Role, not the actor's name so i don't think it's pertinent to this argument. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

You can have this windmill, i'm already tired of dodging blades. I've got a new DVD player to install. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

While the debate was about actual name it is still relevant - Quote: For any film with standard credits, take the actor information from the end credits only, with names and roles listed exactly as they are in the credits and in exactly the same order credited. Exception: If the credit information is entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead. So if we have to copy the name exactly, we also have to copy the role exactly surely? |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting Forget_the_Rest: Quote: So if we have to copy the name exactly, we also have to copy the role exactly surely? And it would be exact...with an appendage. But we would still have the Actor's name jumbled and not As Credited. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting hal9g: Quote: The second section is clearly a clarification of the opening part of the Rule which states "exactly as credited". By saying "in addition to", that tells me to apply the first part and then after doing the first part, apply any of the other rules in this section. The result is a combination of both parts.
What he said Quoting hal9g: Quote:
Wayne, John O'Hara, Maureen Bond, Ward
Bonus points for the movie with the above credits (not including 'etc., etc.'). (2 correct answers) One of the movies is The Quiet Man. Not sure about the 2nd |

Skip So this one credit is the exception to the rule, the one that isn't shown As Credited? | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | I would have to saye yes, tweeter, why the filmmakers did that...your guess is as goo as mine. I will say howevere, personally that I have used that format for my own name, if I want to include my nickname, I don't think I would do so in a film credit situation but...it is not an unknown format, just one that until Harry potter has not been seen, at least not by me. More tpically as you know the nickname is in the Middle Name area, and designated in several different formats, parens being one.
I think I remember seeing similar creds ONE other time, in Rambo IV, and in both instances I do recall studying them a bit trying to figure out what they were trying to say.

Quote: Tweeter, are you suggesting that if the credits for a film were actually displayed on screen as :
Wayne, John O'Hara, Maureen Bond, Ward etc., etc.
that we should enter it exactly as credited?
We have the Credited As field to accommodate these: John Wayne [Wayne, John]
Given that Goblet of Fire is Rosson's only credit that field doesn't come into play, i wish it could.
Quote: The result is a combination of both parts. In Rosson's it wouldn't be a combination but simply the second part. I'm sorry, but using the "credited as" field in this situation is pointless. | | | Hal |

that we should enter it exactly as credited? We do so already. For asian names. We're not discussing Asian names. You are simply muddying the waters. | | | Hal |
