It sounds to me as if both posters want a sort title of "The Terminator" and not "Terminator" or "Terminator, The". And the display option can't help with that.

Actually neither user specified where they wanted the "The" to be, they just wanted it in the sort title.
They never specified if they wanted it at the front or back.

But if they do want it at the front, then no I wouldn't like to see this introduced, but I would like to see if being appended, not removed.

I simply assumed they want it in front because it rarely makes a (sorting) difference at the end. Granted in the example given it would make a difference since "Terminator" would be sorted before "Terminator 2", but "Terminator, The" would be sorted after "Terminator 2" -> But who'd want that effect in that very example?

Since i'm still unsure if people are on the same page, heres a pretty picture:

I am not english or French or whatever language removes words from titles, so naturally i search The Departed from T. It would be great if there was a way to stop DVD Profiler removing words from the Sort title

Yes, we seem to be on the same page. But I can only speak from a german POV and how libraries handle it: Books starting with a definite article ("der", "die", "das") or an indefinite article ("ein", "eine") are sorted under the starting letter of the second word or a great deal of german literature would be found under "d" and "e". And I believe it's the same in english ("the", "a", "an") and french ("l'", "la", "le", "les", "un", "une", "des").

So the book "A Tale of Two Cities" / "Eine Geschichte aus zwei Städten" by Charles Dickens is to be found under "T" (english) and "G" (german).

It is definitely the same in English (US English at the very least). Although not in a library as we use the Dewey Decimal System in our libraries.

And what do you search for when you've found The?  There'll likely still be hundreds of titles starting with The in a large collection so the article has very little use for sorting purposes, you'll still need to look for the next word...

While I won't profess personal first hand knowledge on thsi, Mu suspicion is that Patsa' comment is precisely why Articles are typically appended. But, of corse since the SortTitle is under your local control, just not the Online, you are free to sort your movies in any fashion that works for you. You want to use The Terminator, you can do that, you want to use Terminator, The you can do that too, you want use Terminator, you have my blessing...you want to call The Terminator... Charlie, be my guest...it is YOUR choice. Whatever works for you.

18, plus probably about 10 in the wrong places. Its easier to go through 18 titles, then be 600 titles in the wrong direction without going alphabetically Its only natural that you search by the 4th letter, when theres many with the same 3 first ones. I like to keep my list of titles sorted with logic, not local customs of various languages

I just think it looks better with the way it says on the cover. I don't look forward to adding 20 seasons of The Simpsons, 2-4 disksets each season and manualy write The infront of each sort title.
If I had a movie called A Tale of Two Cities and it was sorted under T I would think i haddn't added it and tried again. That way of sorting is not logical for me.
So if there was a movie called "The", it should be sorted first in list cause after The is no characters and emty gets sorted first?
Why don't computers sort files this way. They sort it based on the order the words are written.

So basicly, even if this is not the right way, it should be an option to not cut sort titles for those who like it this way.

Karsten is correct, this is a standard English convention.  When alphabetizing titles, 'A', 'An', and 'The' are ignored.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Let me repeat it for you ,tee. YOU control your own database and you can sort them ANYWAY you wittle heart desires. You do not control the manner in which the Online is sorted, ONLY Ken has thatt control and this has been done because once upon a time every one of our users was trying to sort the movies to HIS of HER own expectations. For example, a user once had a reasionable idea of wanting all of his James Bond titles together, so he tried to impose on the rest of the world James Bond 04, now how are you going to do it are you gong to look for Thunderball or James Bond 04, James Bond IV, whatever I submit you are going to search for Thunderball. Ken tried making the very clear statement SORT=TITLE, that didn't work, users were still doing whatever tehy wanted without regard to each other. So Ken finally made the Sort a local choice ONLY and he controls the manner in which the Online sorts. So sort your data how YOU want it to be and be happy.

I will admit I got completely the wrong idea about the feature request and I certainly wouldn't have any use for it. But if this is something that only works for a few languages (does the Finnish language not have articles?) then I have no objection to it being an option you can switch off if you want to.

Since Windows XP even the explorer sorts 20 before 100 even though "1" comes before "2" in a strictly alphanumerical order.

DVD Profiler is basically a library software and as such it follows library sorting logic.

And as Skip said you can put in the sort title whatever you want, it's a one time only job.

I know I can sort it as I like and it's one time only job. Just wish it was a way to not fix this manualy. As i said before; Too much work fixing 20 seaosons, 2-4 disc sets per season, of The Simpsons.
Could have a option like sort = relasename or sort = library logic when adding new movies to own profile.
Or override sort logic.

Skip: to me it seems that online sorting = local sorting of indiviual user. If you check my list you should see bluray movies, then bluray music, then dvd music and last dvd movies

In older (pre-OPAC) library catalogs in Germany, the sort title is derived by grammatical dependency, with the most independent word first. Just saying.

First you have to understand that there are in essence TWO Online Profiles, when you upload your collection to Invelos, they in effect creat a CLONE of your data, it's a form of emergency backup (not to replace the local backup), because it is a clone of your data, anyone viewing your collection will see the data as you are dealing with it. The other Online is the One we Contribute to and download from and that Sort is totally controlled by Ken. when you add a disc to your list you are dealing with Ken's listing and his sorting.
