I have to admit, my first reaction to the cover was the same as Paul's, that Dan picked the worst-case scenario possible cover to use in his example.  Intentional or not, that's how to came across in light of his biased poll.

I've bought a lot of HD movies and so far, this is the first one I've seen that came with a banner on the paper.

I added a blu-ray set just so those of you who are looking for problems can't say that I'm biased against blu-ray too.

BTW, there are quite a few of those combo discs and most of them are like the one I posted.

I prefer this one, the cover with a banner that is not the result of cropping out the case except for the top.  I reduced the width of this example image to 250 pixels wide because it's easier to compare to others if there happened to be others to compare it with.  (hint hint)

Thank you for changing the "Option A: No Banner" picture example (although you still left the picture in question as an example).

Out of 192 HD discs that I currently own, 16 of them are "Combos" and only 6 of those have the "banner" on the paper.

They are:
Rumor Has IT: HD DVD and DVD Combo

Firewall: HD DVD and DVD Combo

16 Blocks: HD DVD and DVD Combo

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: HD DVD and DVD Combo

Happy Feet: HD DVD and DVD Combo

Suberman Returns: HD DVD and DVD Combo

Regards,

Paul

I would have no problem with using, ummmm for lack of a better choice of words, a "Profiler" banner as Dr. Kildare generated. It would give a "uniform" appearance to our data, at least until Hollywood changes it ( but that's way down the road...I hope) and it is rather clean in appearance.

I vote Option A.
because Lettes from Iwo Jima is a Bad Example.
The DVD / HD-Combo Banner is on the Cover, so it belongs to the CoverScan.
But in the DB it`s now with the HD-DVD Logo from the Case, which i still believe it don`t belong to
the Scan normally.

Because you can also select in the Gerneral Information Media Type field both,
DVD and HD-DVD if it is an Combo DVD.

Maybe it was in the 2.x version needed since this don`t separate the different Media Types, also the HD-DVD or Blu-Ray was entered in the Edtion Field (which now is no longer required)

So, I think option A is what has to choosen.
If the Information is needed in the DVD-Profiler Online View, than the Media Type Field should be added there, and not the Complete Cover Case.
Exception would be in the future, when there will be Special Editions of HD Cases which are not blue or red case.

If you have DVD Profiler set to view details or thumbnail mode, it makes spotting HD DVD and Blu-ray easier to spot.  Otherwise, they look just like all the rest.

True, but then we should maybe file a feature request for this. E.g. a small icon in the corner of every thumbnail that indicates whether it's a regular DVD, BluRay or HD-DVD.
I think adding the banner to the cover scans is just a clumsy workaround.

I will only say this based on what I see in the poll Space. I am not expressing my thoughts on this. Bu I would say based on TWO factors (1) this poll is inconclusive and (2) there has been a user convention in place for over a year that many years have spent many hours of work following. I would have to say that whatever the Rule says it should include the banners. That is only based on what I see and not based on whatever my opinion may or may not be. The amount of work that users have put into this is substantial and should not be simply dismissed. Me....I have no bone in this fight since I am not buying...yet, but I do think that overturning what has previously been done is insulting to those who have done the work.

Skip, I told you this several times. There is no consensus.  Look back at the other threads you have mentioned and you will see that there was no consensus then either.

That is correct there is no consensus. But there is an ESTABLISHED convention.

The difference  here is that regardless of whatever I might think personally, I recognize that there is a Convention in place that has been followed for some time now and that however many users have sp[ent a significant amount of time in creating those images. I am not willing, without an overwhelming and I do mean overwhelming consensus, to say to those users "Oh, I am sorry we are going to do it this way now and all that work you have done has been wasted." Time is money Dan, and those hours that have been spent represent a significant investment, versus somebody who just wants to change direction. I am sorry, that's the way I feel about it, what I might think otherwise is absolutely irrelevant. If when the times comes I choose that I don't want the banners, I can do that and keep it locally, I don't have to impose my will on the database contrary to popular opinion.

Covers without banners look just wrong to me. It has the wrong proportions and look more like a CD cover than a DVD cover.

>150 HD DVDs and counting

Why do we need banners at all?  Isn't there a checkbox already for identifying if it's Blue or HD?

John:

As has been noted besides there being a convention inplace, there is also a technical reason for this. Pocket Profilers only means of identifying HD and BD is via the Cover Art. Yes a feature request can be made to change PP and has, but if Ken decides to make that change how long will it be. Next week, next month.
