As the poll currently stands, 27 people favor some form of 'Chow Yun-Fat', while 12 favor 'Yun-Fat//Chow'...

Funny. For me, I read 15 for Chow//Yun-Fat, 10 for Chow/Yun/Fat, 2 for Chow//Yun Fat and 12 for Yun-Fat//Chow.  We have a coherent third that seem to know how to handle asian names in true life, and about two third who prefer rules to true life, but cannot agree ( about 50/50) about the way to parse a three part name. If the 27 people in favor of "Chow Yun(-?)Fat" were able to explain which part of the rules they use to choose between the three possibilities, you perhaps could play this game...

Funny, I thought I said "SOME FORM of 'Chow Yun-Fat'.  That means two thirds are not in favor of reversing the order when entering the name.  The fact that they didn't agree on a single way to parse it doesn't change the fact that they DO NOT want to reverse the order.

Thanks for admitting that your method does not follow the rules...and please don't try and claim you didn't say that.  You clearly said that a third know how to handle the names in true life while two thirds prefer rules.

In addition, as you are fully aware, the rules do not tell us how to parse names.  Because they don't, most people will enter them as '1/2/3'...unless they are shown that it should be '1/ /2 3'.

If they wanted it reversed, they would have done so in the movie credits, They don't.

what does this proof? nothing, because movie-credits are no excel/access-sheet

Leslie Cheung btw. is credited in the chinese symbols as "Cheung Gwok Wing".
So the just choose with "western name"-variant of his name for the "western-culture viewers".
Nevertheless Ti, Cheung and Chow are their family names.

It shows the consistency of their credits: in English reading from the left to right.
and why would we not use the provided "western name"-variant?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chow_Yuen_Fat

this has nothing to do with name-writing direction... The Profiler forced us to enter a person's name-credit intothe 3 database-fields "first name" "middle name" "last name".
So the correct database entry is:

"Lung//Ti" credited as "Ti Lung"
"Yun-Fat//Chow" credited as "Chow Yun-Fat"

the fact that Leslie Cheung is credited in 2 variants and which one we should choose is another tricky discussion

Whatever you think is right when is comes to the sequence, Chow/Yun/Fat is as wrong as Helena/Bonham/Carter.

I doubt your 'most people argument' when I look at the profiles in my collection. Most people are actually very good in parsing names and correctly choose between 1/2/3, 1 2//3, 1//2 3, 3 2//1, and rarely 3/2/1.
I would agree though that the correct decision is most often 1/2/3.

Nobody is denying that we read the full name from left to right in English.
Still Mr. Chow's last name is Chow.
The fields are not in the same order in which we would read the full name.
The fields are in the order first name, last name, middle name.
But this order has no particular meaning.
The field labels have a meaning and the credited as field has a meaning on the other hand.

When I look at my collection, I don't see a single instance of a name parsed '3 2/ /1'...at least none that I have noticed.  Granted, I only have 1,036 DVDs in my collection so my experience is limited to those titles.

Edit:  I just looked and see that you have fewer titles than I do.  It's hard to believe that you have seen this and I haven't.  I guess you have a lot more DVDs, with Asian actors, than I do.

That's why I have said rarely. I can't remember one myself. The same would be true for 3//2 1.

Not at all! I have only a small selection of Asian movies. But most of them are region 2 locality Germany. Because I like to watch them with original sound and since I do not understand a little bit of any Asian language and since English is not my native language, I prefer to have German subtitles.

And the 3/2/1 part i have already responded to, I can't remember one myself.
But I can see a lot of 3 2//1 [1 2 3] in my Asian movies.

Please see my edited post...that was a typo.  I meant to type '3 2/ /1'.

Ok, see my comment:

The reason is probably the different locality of my DVDs as explained above.

EDIT: Actually the above should be 2 3//1 [1 2 3]. Sorry about the confusion.

Agreed, kinda. My son is named after my father. He is not a Junior, there in fact is no Junior. he is a II.
