I use numerous tools plus my own system. What I have seen is the majority of time the DD Surround flag is usually set. Outside of 80s TV and some 90's an actual stereo track that is not flagged is rare indeed, not more than a handful of movies have been recorded in genuine 2-channel Stereo. 2-Channel Mono is Common, that too takes tools to document, but it is common.

Now that we have an "official "statement" from the Dolby site itself, that the surround data is ALWAYS there, is that proof enough for you, that I can change all the stereo tracks to Surround ?
I am not talking about Music tracks and early 80s and before tv-programs
Just for movies.
cheers Donnie The surround data is there if it's in the mix that you are compressing. It doesn't mean they use the theatrical mix as the basis for dubs and commentaries. |

How i check: 1) My receiver (a Sony DA777ES) will display the channels detected on the front panel. If it detects Dolby Digital Stereo it displays Dolby [2/0] and if it detects Dolby Surround it displays Dolby Pro Logic. When it displays [2/0] (thats [Front/Rear]) i cannot hear anything from the Center or Surround speakers. 2) PowerDVD 7.4: Normal playback is always DD 2.0, whether the track is surround or not. If i switch to Media File mode (opening the .VOB files on the disc directly) i can see Surround or DD 2.0 indicated and it is consistent with my receiver. Up first: Galaxy Quest (UPC: 667068601725) Region 1 Produced: 1999 Anamorphic 2.35:1 Audio tracks: English: DD 5.1 English: DD 2.0 Thermian: DD Surround The English DD 2.0 and Thermian Surround tracks decode that way on my receiver (center channel kicks in immediately when i switch to Thermian Surround) and PowerDVD in Media File mode. The Piano (UPC: 012236046202) Region 1 Produced 1992 Widescreen 1.85:1 Audio tracks: English: DD 2.0 This track decodes that way on my receiver and Power DVD (all modes). | | | Bad movie? Cube (5035822000407 UK DVD) - Main audio track is Stereo, Commentary is Surround.
Diary of the Dead (5055201804297 UK DVD) - Secondary audio track is Stereo & Commentary track is also Stereo.
These have been visually confirmed with my AV receiver. If you need any more info, I'll see what I can do. |

PowerDVD-in-Media-File-mode has always matched the results from my receiver. Doing so, I've found that there aren't nearly as many "Surround"-encoded tracks as some in this thread would have us believe. |

Can you provide examples? Finnish Blu-Ray release of "Vicky Christina Barcelona". I have verified it myself as 3.0 PCM, but for being mono, I remember reading that from finnish DVD magazine. Unfortunately I just wasted the magazine, so I can't read the review again to verify if my memory serves me correctly. I also have finnish DVD release of "4 luni, 3 saptamâni si 2 zile", which has 3.1 DTS track. |

I would disagree with this using teh content of my collection. I would say I have a majority of my DVDs with 2.0 tracks are not flagged as surround or in many cases I found one language is flagged as surround and another is not. This may be due to the fact that our collections have different content changing the sample data changes the results. Tom |

Woody Allen films all of his movies in Mono, I have never looked into how precisely they are encoded on the disc (1.0, 2.0 or 3.0) however. | | | Last edited: by bob9000 |
