So, do you need wi-fi to add to the collection?  Or, frankly, must you have wi-fi to make this app work?

Right now that's how it seems to me, making the app absolutely frigging useless.

I'm even perfectly willing to enter my entire collection manually, since I can't sync the ipod with my desktop, but tapping on "add to my collection" only gets me "searching for results" and never any results.

What are some of the UPCs that you are trying that it isn't finding? Have you changed your locality to only search the appropriate locality.

You do not need Wi-fi to make it work. If you have a device with 3G, you can synch that way. Or you can manually enter your collection like you are trying to do.

I just started at the top of my list by title.  That would be 2 Million Minutes, which also doesn't have a UPC (I entered it by disc ID when I contributed).

What happens if you add it by title?

All I ever get is "searching for results"  ... but it never completes.

To add titles directly on the device (other than manual entries), an Internet connection is required - either wifi or 3G will work.

The app would be huge if the entire database was loaded on it. The current way makes the most sense.

That's very true.  I just wish there was some way for me to connect/use the app, without having to have a wi-fi connection.  I was very much looking forward to it - it's the entire reason I got an itouch, though I've enjoyed it's musical capabilities -  and it looks really really cool, I went ahead and bought it ... and I can't do anything with it, unless I plan to spend my entire off day some time sitting in Panera, or buy a wi-fi router that I'll have no other use for.  It's just very, very disappointing.

You might not have another reason to use WiFi, but what a reason it is.
If you setup WiFi you won't be disappointed anymore... Guaranteed!!!!!

Plus all the other functions of the iPod Touch that wi-fi will allow other than just syncing DVD Profiler; seems like more than enough reason to pick up a router.

I second that. Once you have wi-fi you don't want to miss it anymore.

If you already have a router for cable, it may already have wi-fi.

If you have a network switch to allow you to network multiple computers together, you can pick up a wi-fi hotspot (not a router) to allow wireless devices onto your network.

If you have dial-up and it shows the modem in your Network Connections under "Start > Settings" and you have a built-in LAN card, you may be able to bridge the two together and plug a wi-fi hotspot to the LAN connection.  A bridge will allow the wi-fi hotspot to share the dial-up connection.  It's been AGES since I used dial-up so this is just guessing.
