First off, read the follow:  http://www.invelos.com/Forums.aspx?task=viewtopic&topicid=436591&PageNum=LAST&x=#LASTPOST

Since DVD region 0, or none, doesn't really exist, add a region setting option for "DVD All".  That in turn will set the technically set all 6 of the regions.  Technically, none does exist for DVDs, in that it only applies to non CSS-encrypted discs.  Examples being many, if not most, of the discs released by the porn industry.  No CSS license fee

This does not apply to BD or HD-DVD discs, as they do not have to have a region set, encryption or no encryption.

Thanks for reading.

NO. This is not the way to fly, mr. v. If you want technical as someone mentioned, keep it locally. the purpose for the program and for the rules is to make it data entry as easy to do and determine as possible for ALL users. We have many users who are not technophobes. So, if you want to get truly rechnical with your data. do it locaklly for your own data and don't try and, even meaning well ( which i know you are), poring gasoline on the fire and start with a bunch of complications that will only serve to confuse many user, thus reducing Contributions.

While you are technically correct, I can't see any practical benefit of this. If nevertheless this would be implemented, I hope it will be done in a way that allows to set all regions by one click (a checkbox, perhaps?).

If anything, I'd focus a feature request on listing the encryption used - because that would at least add data we don't currently track.

Technical matters aside--I will not argue one way or the other--the Rules should be clarified as to what is wanted:

'"List DVDs encoded for at least Regions 1-6 as "All."'

Does not tell one how to list as "All."  This would be clearer:

'For DVDs encoded with at least Regions 1-6, leave all Regions unchecked.'

OK; I lied--I'm going to take a side:

I would prefer that all valid Regions be checked, because as it stands now, if a profile has no Regions checked, there is no way to tell if this represents "no data" (no one has checked this disc) or "All" Regions.

If no one has checked the disc it usually has the default region as printed on the cover, which can be [0] or something else. (It's actually the first source we are told to use in the rules.)

This only looks like yet another elaborately clever solution in search of a problem.

Agreed.  Having no regions set at this point means either it's region free or no one has bothered to enter region data.  It would be great to be able to distinguish between those two.

Actually the cover is not a very good source. It usually shows "0" (for region free DVDs) or the region of the locality (only). The actual DVD is often made for multiple localities and sometimes multiple regions (combination of 2 and 4 is particularly frequent).

If any company labeled a release as 0, then it is in errror (I've not seen one of those).  Region 0 does not exist.  The disc must be encoded with regions 1 through 6 set for it to be all regions.

Is there a simple piece of software out there that can query a disc and find out what bits are set?  We have software that can remove CSS and set all of the region bits, but it would be nice to be able to see what discs are really set to, not just what is listed on the label.  That would make for an accurate database.

I usually use Nero Infotool to check the actual regions.

I appreciate what you're trying to do here.  But I discovered years ago that while we have a pretty bright group of people here, the region stuff went over a lot of heads or they simply didn't care.  People are happy and content with what we have and there's little desire for change.

Not trying to pick on anyone.  Just present the facts.  Carry on.

Unfortunately the region 0 thing is entrenched.  When DVD manufacturers actually mark their disc packaging as being region 0, you know it is a lost cause.

Because of that, the report I contributed for V3.6 that correctly displays Blu-ray and DVD region codes, takes into account that no region code is really regions 1 thru 6.  The use of the new panels and panel cascading allows for the testing of the various DVD region code combinations.  So, if anyone sets regions 1 thru 6, or sets none, the report will print the same image.

Getting DVDP to make no-region to mean that the coding is unknown and to set all 6 regions for an all region disc is never going to happen.  Hence the report coding that I did use.

What is kinda mind boggling is that the concept of how DVD region coding works not being understood is strange.  It is such a simple concept.  Then again, my background is in computer logic, software and electronics.  Understanding ones and zeros a requirement

Good thing that tri-logic never really took off.
