My take on it is: Justification "a reason, fact, circumstance, or explanation that justifies or defends" And based on that, if you say something like "I'm adding a birth year of 1970 to Joe Smith because there is another actor with this same name...", that would be justification. Saying "I'm adding a birth year of 1970 to Joe Smith because he's my favorite actor" is not justification. IMO. | | | ...James

James, you defined a word by using the word in the definition. But I agree with your premise and add another example: "Added birth year to Joe Smith (1970) because I found out his birth date." would NOT be justification. | | | Kevin |

I just repeated the first definition from the Dictionary.com page that I linked. | | | ...James

| Posted: | | | | How do we handle a situation where there is already a birthdate attached to a person in the database? I submitted cast/crew information for "Son of Frankenstein / Ghost of Frankenstein" where the birth date was already there. I have received a no vote asking for justification for adding the birth year. Since I did not place the birth dates there, I have no idea whether they were justified by whomever submitted them with another title. In some cases, I have no other titles in my collection with these people credited. Removing them may be an error.
I have personally only added the birth year to one actress -- Diana Lewis (1915), credited in a Marx Brothers film. I justified this in the contribution, mentioning that there is another Diana Lewis credited in the 1976 film "Rocky". That Diana Lewis is an African-American woman who's been working as a TV news anchor at WXYZ-TV in Detroit for the past 30 years. Now, if another person tries to contribute a different film with Diana Lewis (1915) and is asked to remove the birth year because he/she cannot provide justification (and has no way of knowing about my justification), that can mess up the profiles for the Marx Brothers film I submitted. | | | Scott | | | Last edited: by smerryfield |

| Posted: | | | | smerryfield, I assume you downloaded the Birth Year with another profile and it is now about to get spread in the main database... While currently that is a tough call, the new rule calls for "justification". Not sure I would keep trace of that (I probably won't ), but the first place to look should be the Contribution Notes of the profile where the Birth Year came from... As I indicated though, we may not remember when and with which profile the Birth Year came to our local database, so it is indeed a legit question. The more and more birth years get added, when contributing to other profiles we'll have to follow the trace and note all the justifications....? | | | Achim [諾亞信; Ya-Shin//Nuo], a German in Taiwan.
