Like I said earlier on in another topic, this online database is a community-driven platform. If a particular movie (whether it is a DVD, Blu-ray, or HD-DVD for that matter) is not part of the database then by all means please submit it yourself. And in the case of your locality, it is most likely that most of the time only German people will submit new entries. Simply put, if all people are just waiting for some new submissions, rather than adding it themselves, the online database will soon indeed be a relic of the past. It all depends on the willingness of the community to keep the DVDProfiler DB up-to-date and alive. | | | DVD Profiler for iOS since: January 9, 2011 (no longer using) DVD Profiler for Android since: June 6, 2013 | | | Last edited: September 15, 2021 1:08 PM by Hotm@iler |

However, many new films are now appearing on streaming services and not until much later on an optical medium. If this database still wants to exist in the future, it has to adapt to this point as quickly as possible (must say that I am still working with version 3.9.1 build 1657 and have not yet made the last update) |

| Posted: September 15, 2021 4:23 PM | | | | It's definitely dying down. I find here in Canada, where we have fewer contributors, I'm getting about a 30% not found rate at the moment. This was, roughly, the failure rate the last time I tried Movie Collector. I've added hundreds myself and built out dozens of box sets and always have a stack going behind the computer that needs to be added. |

Just create a ' manual profile' and enter the data you deem necessary for your profile. I use the UPC code for physical releases. There are cases where UPC codes are reused, so in that case, one creates alternate IDs...still based on UPC. To achieve this, generally: 1. I search for a matching title. Being in Canada, the movies I'm adding have usually already been created in the US under a different UPC, as such the profiles already approved by the community. 2. I add this US version of the movie to my database, then change the UPC to match my copy. You need to make note of the original UPC/disk-ID before you change it as you need it for the contribution, if you submit cast and/or crew. 3. Then I update any relevant information, such as publishers/distributors, ratings, cover scans, disk-IDs, etc. which may be different in Canada, than in the US. 4. Once that's done, it's ready for contribution. Once you do a few of them to get the hang of it, other than the cover scans, new entries can be done in a matter of, perhaps, 10 minutes. That said, if you cannot find a profile to copy, creating a new entry completely from scratch, is much more time consuming. As for getting updates for digital, I wouldn't count on it. We haven't seen a software update in what...4 years? Personally, I wouldn't enter digital in to DVD Profiler. I use the software as a tool to ensure I don't purchase duplicates, and even if I have a movie digitally, I would still purchase a physical copy. |

| Posted: September 15, 2021 9:12 PM | | | | A few years back, over a Christmas Holiday, DJ Doena and I worked on a set of tools using Kens latest plugin wizardry, that allows adding all the things people complain that don't exist for streaming: custom fields for sources, digital registration numbers, multiple copies, enhanced titles and any other metadata. All part of the official database, backups, etc.
Usually, Ken takes those ideas and prototype implementations and adds features to the official product. It didn't happen this time. I can understand why people don't use those tools if there is no prospect that the functionality will eventually appear in the product.
Some examples of old plugins that were replaced by similar functionality in the main program:
BulkEdit DVD Cloning - Ken's similar function: Copy / Paste MyTabs (obsolete) - Kens' similar function: Custom Collections DVDEmail (obsolete) - Ken's version: email functions LoadDVD - Ken's version: My Links
There might be others, can't remember. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. Advanced plugins available here. Hey, new product!!! BDPFrog. | | | Last edited: September 15, 2021 10:06 PM by mediadogg |

| | | Last edited: September 15, 2021 10:08 PM by Cpt.Hardy |

thanks for the hints. I can use it to create a manual profile, at least a first step. Unfortunately, uploading doesn't work ... So there should definitely be worked on if the original idea of a user-created database is to be continued.
Well a manual profile cannot be contributed. By definition, a manual profile does not have a valid UPC or disc ID. If you can find a legitimate UPC or disc ID that represents the DVD, and can verify the associated metadata, then use it. | | | Thanks for your support. Free Plugins available here. | Posted: September 16, 2021 8:50 AM | | | | we are going around in circles: there are no new entries in the database new entries are only possible with UPC or DiscID Current films from Netflix or other streaming services do not have a number Conclusion: In order to be able to continue using the DVD Profiler in a meaningful way in the future, this restriction must be lifted.
But I wonder, if any moderator or even the programmer is still here around. |

But I wonder, if any moderator or even the programmer is still here around. But what would you use as a search key? Why would you add anything from Netflix or other streaming services? Content on such platforms is ephemeral and changes over time. New movies/shows are released as old movies/shows are decommissioned. For local content, say on Plex, Kodi or other similar media server, you have to search by title anyway, so select one that suits your need. Does it really matter if they're using UPC/disk-ID as a primary key at that point? If you want to add a brand new title, that doesn't already exist in any form and you don't own the disk, what I would do is search the UPC up on Google, then you have the UPC for a submission. You obviously won't be able to add the disk-ID to the profile, but make a note of that in the profile submission, and someone else may add it at a later point. | | | Last edited: September 16, 2021 3:43 PM by 69samael69 |

| Posted: September 16, 2021 4:15 PM | | | | we can do that with an example: The movie Thunder Force was released on Netflix in April 2021. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunder_Force_(Film) I can enter the film manually for myself, but the database doesn't live on that. A UPC or Disc ID is nowhere to be found. So how is that supposed to be done with this film, for example? |

You don't own those, so why would you want to add them at all? You can manually add movies like this and even upload them to your on-line profile, you just can't contribute them to the core database and, really, why would you need to or even want to? It's software for managing your collection, not to track everything you've watched or everything that exists on any media source. Are you simply just looking to track movies you've watched? You can do this on IMDB. Create an account, create a list, then add everything you've watched to the list. Their database is vastly more complete, especially when it comes to digital-only titles such as this. | | | Last edited: September 16, 2021 4:54 PM by 69samael69 |

| Posted: September 16, 2021 5:08 PM | | | | I use the Android app to check on the go which DVD I have already bought. Also the database when I am looking for information about a film.
My problem - or better said the general problem - is not solved here and since a DVD or BluRay is a dying relic, the DVDProfiler with this philosophy will unfortunately not survive much longer.
If the media change and the films are only available on the hard drive in the future, this software should also adapt. That's just my opinion.
You can already see that hardly any new publications have been registered for 1 1/2 years. Why should that change again at some point? | | | Last edited: September 16, 2021 5:12 PM by Cpt.Hardy |

There are screeners to approve contributions, spam (albeit not all of it) is removed from the New Users Forum so there still is activity. Even Ken Cole was online 9 days ago, but no word from him for several years. So I'm afraid your hope for change is in vain. | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |
