I bought over a dozen South Park Seasons before they started doing Blu-ray releases, so I've kept buying them in DVD format. I've compared the SD and HD versions and that sort of simple animation doesn't warrant a re-purchase. Plus, it would look wonky on my shelf. I have season 23 DVD pre-ordered!

Some obscure and independant movies are still released DVD-only, so I'll buy those if I really like the movie.

Otherwise it's Blu-ray goodness!

I don't think I'll ever get into 4K for MANY reasons: shelf storage space, how old I am, how much time and money I've spent on upgrading most of my DVDs to Blu-ray, the weak used market for selling off movies I've upgraded, my eyesight resolution, my television wall space limits, my spouse's love and patience through the years of all my collecting things to watch, my numerous other hobbies I enjoy, why support the studios for releasing the same set of movies again on 4K when we're begging for other titles to be released on Blu-ray, the retail shopping space shutdown of most home media sales, studios who failed in their Blu-ray transfers or extras department who can't be trusted to do it proper for 4K, shifted priorities of what's important in life with recent events on Planet Earth, etc...

for old movies that are not availble on blu/4k only. i have given up buying tv shows that air/stream in HD but only sell on dvd, the only remaining i will buy is to close out series im already invested in. i cant imagine blu-ray production these days is significantly more cost than dvd, all these releases should be on blu - not doing so is a crying shame bordering on the old non anamorphic widescreen or pan and scan.

Almost all movies are Blu-ray except for old movies that don't rely on special effects and which I've never seen so don't even know if I like them.

What "old movies"?  I don't even see anything there that's B&W.

My philosophy is, if it's younger than me, it's not an old movie.

Old: Older than now minus ten years.

It's a matter of perspective, I guess. For me "old movies" means pre 1990.

But a 2005 movie is not new either. And a 1995 movie is one human generation old.

One doesn't go from new to old in the blink of an eye.  There is a transition period that's as long as each of us would like it to be.  An "old" movie for me is one that was around during my youth.  YMMV.

That is what my two millenial sons think, too. So anything produced before, say, 2010 is old. That is about 90% of my collection
Then again, they call me boomer...

AFAIC, an old movie = classic Hollywood, so anything made before 1970 (technically, 1968).
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

I'm happy to buy DVD - still happy with the DVD video quality (I watch on a 60" screen and my eyesight is not brilliant.)  So I only tend to spend the extra cash on Blu Ray when DVD is not available.

I had a relapse.

And it just feels more fitting to have a 90s sitcom on DVD.

Streaming offers few valuable "old" titles. And we become dependent on the choice of these companies. You can't watch what you want. Long live DVDs and Blu-Rays!

That's an interesting thought.  I've recently watched both Dirty Harry and Rocky on DVD and do remember thinking that the DVD quality somehow added to the grimy feel of the locations. However, not sure if this was me thinking clearly or just trying to justify not upgrading them to Blu-ray to save the money.

(I also have to admit though that I have very recently bought Rocky on Blu-ray, but haven't watched it yet.)
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...
