One thing that's come up is, what to do when two versions that are otherwise identical including cover images, but one is a snapper and the other is a keep case. For one Something Weird DVD I have the case is a snapper with a lovely fold out front cover, but at some point it appears to have be switched to a keep case without the UPC changing (I'm guessing here that the snapper came first as snappers in general have fallen out of fashion). Is there any way of noting the existence of both in the profile itself without creating an alternate ID just for the case type? If not, *should* I create a separate profile even though the case type is the only difference?

That's somewhat difficult. The rules allow for "Alternate Version" profiles, and this would then have to fall under the "Updated re-releases of a title under the same UPC/EAN" variety. The rules on that state:
Quote:
Use for: Two or more releases of the same title with largely different cover images

Not everyone here may feel the same way about that, but you could argue that the change from snapper to keepcase has resulted in "largely different cover images" - at the very least, a keep case insert has different dimensions than the snapper images would have had. Whether that difference is big enough to warrant an Alternate Version profile may be up for debate, but certainly some users feel that way, and have been submitting them. This really is one of those things that should've been immediately clarified upon introduction of these Alternate Versions - but it hasn't been clarified, so now it's up for grabs. So not everyone may feel the same way, but if you submit one of these, it'll likely be approved.

And I suppose since this particular cover is a fold-out, I could unfold it; otherwise the cover image looks about the same. It wouldn't help in cases where the snapper case wasn't fold-out but it could work if I wanted to differentiate the versions in this case.

I've been told in the past that the cover isn't "significantly different" when it's the same cover but formatted for Snapper or Keep Case.

Snappers definitely came first and studios that were using them then switched to keep cases, not the other way around.  A re-release with a keep case would also have a different release date.  Also, when an item is re-released the studios tend to change the (c) date for the release in the credits block on the back cover.  This is different then the copyright date for when the film was made.  This would help to show that cover doesn't match the release date.

For example:

Quote:
(c) 2019 Universal Studios.  All Rights Reserved.

Some of the studios which used snappers originally were Warner, New Line, Live Entertainment, etc.

That makes sense if the date does change. I compared the back cover dates (my Snapper copy and the one in the system that is set to Keep Case) and they're the same unfortunately. When the UPC is the same I don't think cover dates always get changed even though they should. Might as well mention, the DVD in question is UPC 014381973822 Monster Nudie Double Feature, a couple of cheesy 1960s b-movies; copyright is 2001 for both. I could probably unfold the cover to get a different image but that might be playing games with the rules a bit.

That's unfortunate and they even left the "(Continued on inside panels)" verbiage in the overview section.  I'm guessing they is no continuation for the keep case; panels, card, booklet, or otherwise.

You got me to take a second look. There *is* a slight difference in the back cover: The Snapper says "Continued on inside panels" while the Keep Case image says "Continued on insert". But is that enough to be considered "significantly different" if the cover is in its normal folded state, particularly since that would also mean creating alternate child profiles as well?

Yes, that would require creating an alternate ID profile (not an alternate child profile).

What I meant by the child profiles is that there are two movies in this box set on the same disc, so if I created an alternate ID for the main profile, the child profiles would probably need to have the same images. I'll go ahead and submit all three (main profile and child profiles). Thx everyone.
